I've never seen anyone mention Le Samoura but I just found it randomly and it's the most suave and cool movie ever made.

I've never seen anyone mention Le Samouraï but I just found it randomly and it's the most suave and cool movie ever made. What are other essential Melville or Alain Delon films? I am thinking of watching Purple Noon, the original Talented Mr. Ripley (it was a remake, who knew?)

Le Cercle Rogue (the red circle) is cool too although I'm not sure what the title quote from the Buddha is supposed to mean.

Nothing, Melville pulled it out of his ass just like the quote from Le Samurai.

"When men, even unknowingly, are to meet one day, whatever may befall each, whatever their diverging paths, on the said day, they will inevitably come together in the red circle."
Yea it does seem a little tacky. Melville's movies seem to get worse as he aged, makes sense considering he made something so great not too far into his career.

Now that's a hot take. From what I've seen the vast majority of people seem to agree that Melville got progressively better (I never bothered with his pre-60s films either)

I'm talking about the stuff he made after Samourai getting worse. His final films seem like rehashes

I love neo noirs but this was such a snooze fest

What's better? Also filtered. It's one of the most captivating and beautiful movies I've ever seen. Easily in my top 5. Have you ever seen Suzuki's Yakuza films like Tokyo Drifter? Those films and Le Samourai feel like Tarantino but better

Seijin Suzuki does seem similar to Melville. I wonder if they talked about each other

Alain Delon stars in L'Eclisse, which is part of Antonioni's alienation film trilogy. They're a good watch.

Army of Shadows is easily the best from Melville imo. It’s amazing. Didn’t care for Le Samurai that much tbh.

I tried watching this movie but couldn't stop laughing at the fedora tipping main character and turned it off.

Everyone in the movie looks completely natural in a fedora though. The reason Fedoras don't work anymore is BPA leakage mimicking estrogen and stunting all males since around the year 2000. It's sad.

Back in the 90s my dad tried to tell me about this movie. I was too much of a shitty little kid to listen to him. He was really into spy/assassin movies for some reason, The Day of the Jackal, Hunt for Red October.

Swann in Love is my favorite of his because I am a fan of Proust. He was cast as De Charlus since he was a famous heartthrob so I suppose the director Volker Schlondorff wanted to turn the typecast on its head by having him play a notorious gay guy.

Looks cool I'm a fan of Proust too. Any thoughts on The Leopard with Delon? It looks like a kinda cool historical drama featuring him

I’ve seen that and wasn’t too thrilled with it. Kinda dragged on a bit. Definitely worth watching if you want something with Delon though since it’s one of his key roles.

I've never had a movie curse my inability to look a day over 18 in my life. I would say I can't look a day over 21 but the only reason people think I'm 21 and not 18 is because aging has slowed to such a crawl that people expect most people under 25 to look like children these days.
Curse these hormone ruining chemicals, I want to look good in a trench coat and fedora unironically.
