I've watched the hbomberguy video on this, and his arguments were pretty solid and robust but...how reasonably can I cope that this deserves its 9.1 rating and that I should watch it anyway? I'm at a point where I'm so fricking desperate for something genuinely good to watch that I'm almost willing to watch it at this point, despite what I know about it.

But if I watch it and it's shit, I think my faith in this medium will reach a breaking point. I recently watched season 1 of leftovers that somebody recommended here, and it was so fricking unbelievably bad that I had to literally force myself through Jill's 8 year old temper tantrums, because that is some morons stereotypical idea of what "teenagers" are.

FRICK MAN FUUUUUUUUUCK. JUST GIVE ME SOMETHING GOOD TO WATCH AHHHH NOTHING IS FRICKING GOOD RIGHT NOW HOLY FRICK.

thanks, but I've been told this enough recently. I just want to get away from everybody and immerse myself in a genuinely well written show. In the meantime I'm trying to watch Dark, and it's pretty engaging so far. But I thought I'd check out Sherlock too since it just seems so short. Like 3 episodes per season? Wtf were they even thinking? Not that I'm complaining

Season 1 and 2 are fine. HbomberBlack person is gay. The appeal of Cumberbatch Sherlock is to watch him insult people’s intelligence with his cool voice, it’s a fun power fantasy. Just don’t watch beyond season 2

Big Black wiener's Sherlock is an okay watch for the first two seasons. The entire appeal as said is seeing Crumpetsnatch being a wienery bastard, in the same way that House was fun. Don't expect any actually smart shit, it's just le wacky adventures of the omniscient detective and his manlet sidekick. If you enjoy that sort of stuff, it's pretty fun. Season 3 and up are just dogshit though.

Dutch and i understand German reasonably well. That's not the point. The story ends up being very convoluted and forced. Things happen because they have to happen for the plot and not because they happen in a natural way. I quit 1,5 episodes before the end. If you like to watch a young German girl cry a lot you should watch it.

For fricking real the story became so stupidly contrived that Im literally forcing myself to get through at this point.

The point I truly realized it, is when Hannah just calls Charlotte randomly to let her know about Older Jonas???? And then you realize they end up telling Katharina and you realize "oh, that's why she called her" And then you go back even further and realize how fricking stupid it was for Jonas to tell Hannah anything. Why? For what? They called Katharina just to tell her about Mikkel, but she literally couldn't fricking contribute anything at that point? They called Charlotte to tell her something she already basically pieced together on her own? He told Hannah...for what again? What the frick seriously was the point? Isn't he on a mission? What the frick is Hannah going to help with?

Unironically the only person that should have been told anything was Charlotte, without the presence of Hannah, because atleast she was competent enough to put most of the threads together and could ACTUALLY help with her resources at the police.

It's all so fricking stupid. And don't pull that "not every character interaction needs to forward the story, sometimes it just needs to be emotional moment between characters!" What fricking deep message about relationships was being said when Older Jonas said his mom only needs herself in the end? Something we already knew? Or when Katharina realizes Mikkel was in 1986, and then fricking just cries like a loser? Who the frick cares? Her reaction was so predictable and simple. There was no depth or nuance of character to be explored there.

Frick. I'm still going tho because I have a weakness for mystery, and atleast Dark isn't as annoying with its characters as The Leftovers was.

Stop seeking a well written show, instead change your standards for what is well written, and then you can make any show well written to your eyes.
        Seize the power within yourself.

          >Stop seeking a well written show, instead change your standards for what is well written, and then you can make any show well written to your eyes.
          >Seize the power within yourself.

I used to think like this, with anime and manga. That I COULD SEE the good writing where even few others could, and could make almost anything "well written" if I put any effort but...dude, you seriously must not have read (and by read I mean manga), or watched enough modern entertainment, because holy frick, it is so fricking easy to write shitty fricking characters.

I get made fun of so fricking hard for genuinely thinking House up to S5 finale is peak television, but everybody else MUST be doing what you're suggesting, because if they can't see that House is so far ahead of most media in terms of character depth, then I don't know what to tell morons.

I used to think that I was overeating house by the time I finished it, but that's only because I didn't see how fricking bad it was everybody else. House is good, but it sticks to the basics, the fundementals of character writing, it isn't crazy bold or anything...well in the modern day it probably is, but that's another argument.

I could write essays on why House is so good and nobody would care. Because everyone is doing what you're telling me to do. Only seeing what they want to see.

I can't do it anymore. Not enough media has a good enough base for me to do it. They all do something egregious, and NO it's not being "woke" it's this feeling, that by trying to make every character "human" and "real" they forget to actually make them a PERSON. An INDIVIDUAL. To modern entertainment and seemingly most people, "real" just means a collection of familiar quirks making up an archetype that is so relatable that you forget they're just an archetype molded to fit neatly into the story, and nothing else.

The first 2 seasons have moments that probably make the episodes worth watching. They aren't great and they don't hold up to any level of scrutiny, but they're ok. Beyond that it's fricking godawful.

I think it's crazy how in hindsight, actually the whole show was pretty weird and dumb, but at the very least if you're new to it the first two, maybe even the third, season are actually fine? Personally I think it just went full moron with Watson's wife being a fricking Agent 47, but up til then it was at least watchable.

But holy frick when they did the shit in the last one where suddenly everything before is invalidated and they add this secret new character that was always there but everyone just...forgot about her? Yeah, holy frick did that retroactively ruin everything.

Also the suicide thing was fricking dumb. Like I get that he faked his death in the stories, but the way it was done in the context of the narrative was awful.

His arguments are all built on a faulty premise that Sherlock is meant to be a traditional detective show where the audience can solve the mystery and fails at it because Sherlock discovers things the audience could have never deduced.
It's not that type of show and never attempted to be that type of show. The original sherlock books weren't like that either.

This is the only reasonable counter argument I see, and the one I thought up. But it's also a weak counterargument, it feels like the same justification as "ITS INTENTIONALLY SUPPOSED TO BE SHIT OKAY??!!!??!????"

Regardless of what it was trying to be, the deductions are ridiculous, and not fun "ridiculous" like House. But actually legit moronic. And the characters are shit and barely real, and the actual narrative itself is fricking moronic. It's just shit writing regardless
