      Why not bring back intermission?

This. If he expects us to get up during the middle of the movie, and miss whatever few minutes those are, then he either doesn't care about the viewer getting the full experience, or he knows the story is so thin it doesn't matter. Which one is it, James?

        Why not bring back intermission?

        What is an intermission?

Americans can't be trusted with intermissions. People can't calm down in the theater as is, getting them out of the groove halfway through will only make it worse.

They would also need to have an attendant at the doors to keep people from trickling in for the next 20 minutes after intermission because they went to fricking McDonald's or some shit.

        Anonymous

He either doesn't remember having young kids or never took them to see a movie in a theater where he couldn't tell the projectionist what to do. As an adult I can tell when it's ok to take a break, because that scene has to be in the middle of act 2 for pacing. Every good movie has the scene where Phoebe Cates tells how her dad got stuck in the chimney and died in a Santa Claus costume. But kids don't know when it's cool to take a bathroom break. They wait until the last minute and then they have to go right now.

Everyone with a sane mind will agree that Avatar was unimaginative it doesn't have to do with being a fricking zoomer and this coming from a 29 year old

        >unimaginative
This guy is the sole reason for every movie needing 3d glasses for the good part of 6 years. Frick off with your reddit-tier analysis

That's not imagination, it's business acumen. The movie is cobbled together from old sci-fi cliches and it fails because the villain is a straw man caricature and because you knew the tree was going to be destroyed from the moment you first saw it. You can tell it was written in anger. The man actually hollers "shock and awe, kick ass" as they are flying off to destroy the magical tree. He didn't write like this when he was young. Compare this idiot villain to Burke in Aliens or Bill Paxton's character in True Lies, Coffey in The Abyss. The man had a sense of fairness and good humor and he didn't set up characters to be punching bags. Even the butthole in Titanic had a pathetic quality about him so that it was hard not to feel sorry for the guy. Avatar isn't a terrible movie all around, but it's a depressingly subpar James Cameron movie.

No, forming a coherent storyline because he resisted editor's notes was his problem. Over time writer directors lose all sense of ability to keep an audience following and take for granted that you almost have to read their mind to keep up with the movie they are putting on screen. See Nolan for this shit, although he will at least make it to where if you watch the movie 3 more times you'll find some sped up dialogue that helps make sense of plot points here or there.

He’s right but he’s also moronic. Intermissions were very popular. A few years back I saw Psycho and it had an intermission. Like, no shit “it’s ok to get up and pee.” Not really an innovative thought or paradigm shift.

Just because I’m already seething, I’d like to add onto this. I don’t know how long his new piece of shit movie will be, but not everyone has 4 hours to kill at a movie theater. It’s fun but I don’t want to be there for hours on end. If I’m at home, I can pause it whenever, no lines for snacks in the kitchen, it’s not a big deal. Frick this fricking moron.

Typical Cinemaphilener, makes up a scenario in his head and gets mad at it. Yeah I do have places to be sometimes, but 4-5 hours at a theater is a hard sell. It’s not exactly an unpopular opinion either, so I don’t know what you’re all uppity about, but please continue to be a colossal homosexual, it’s working out great.

Even in a universe where Covid never happened and the cinema industry never took the huge permanent hit it did, I doubt Avatar 2 could have ever reached a billion. Avatar was entirely a product of its time and a spectacle. People went to experience the CGI and the 3D effects. It more an amusement park ride than a movie.

No one talks about Kill Bill like it's two movies. Everyone accepts that it's a single work. I don't see why there's a problem with this. Release them together and show them back to back for people who want an uninterrupted experience.

      >miss part of the movie to go pee
God I hate boomers who think the movie theater is still relevant.

Movie theaters are important. No one wants to make direct-to-video movies, and that's what a movie like The Irishman, Don't Look Up, etc. are at the end of the day. The money may be good but there's no escaping the fact that if your movie isn't in a theater, you made a TV movie.

Epics should be Epics in the classical definition. Not when you saw a random movie and say its hella epic. It must be wide in scope, drama, bombast, and has all the bells and whistles of a high budgeted production with the best cast avallable for the job. TDK Trilogy, MCU Infinity Saga are not epics. They are just a series of related movies.

Really? Most people in these threads were Avatar fans saying Top Gun 2 would flop because only Avatar 2 could bring audiences back into theatres. Looks like their comments didn't age well.

people have been saying the next james cameron film will flop since the fricking original terminator. i dont know when those ding dongs will learn.
      people want a spectacle.
people want something they havent seen before.
people want an enormous romantic vision of something fantastic.
i have all kinds of criticisms for camerons work but he at least makes going out to the movies worth it. even that goddamn titanic movie.

        >people want a spectacle.
The original Avatar was a spectacle... Thirteen years ago.
        >people want something they havent seen before.
This is a sequel. It's not going to be something new.
        >people want an enormous romantic vision of something fantastic.
The first movie wasn't romantic. The blue furry alien ponytail brain sex scene was unintentionally hilarious because of how awkward and weird it was.
        >i have all kinds of criticisms for camerons work but he at least makes going out to the movies worth it. even that goddamn titanic movie.
Titanic was successful because it was the perfect date movie. It had romantic shit at the beginning for girls, and then the second half had action for the guys.

terminator 2 is more celebrated than the original
          >The first movie wasn't romantic. The blue furry alien ponytail brain sex scene was unintentionally hilarious because of how awkward and weird it was.
no romantic as in romantic comedy, or romance novel. romantic as in romanticism. the artistic movement. something which highlights the best and/or more intense aspects of life. something which idealizes man, the world, the divine. something that reaches beyond the mundane, beyond the ordinary, the commonplace.
          romanticism, not a romance.

            >terminator 2 is more celebrated than the original
Yes and it's also an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie that's just over two hours long. It's not a four-hour movie about blue furries.
            >something which highlights the best and/or more intense aspects of life. something which idealizes man, the world, the divine.
            Avatar is none of that.

People like you resisted T2 just like you're doing to A2 right now. Saying oh, T2 is just an excuse to have Arnold's muscles on screen and nobody would care about a roided homosexual
See you in 5 years when you're using A2 as reference to something a movie that's coming out isn't.

Major cope considering Arnold had been super popular for years at that point. People liked it because it was an action movie about Arnold shooting people with big guns, not because it had James Cameron's name attached to it.

It's even less that, be real. It's literally a story about a guy betraying his brothers because of a woman. It doesn't get more base than that.

yea I'm not a fan of avatar but cameron doesn't do assembly line shit like most everything else, especially capeshit
it stands to reason he prepared something at least worth a watch if he decided it was worth making in the first place
add to it the totality of the circumstances he's in i.e. his unprecedented and massive double whammy of titanic and avatar successes, the 13 years that passed since, it's been 25 years since cameron made non-blueBlack person movie.. the capeshit monopolizing cinemas etc
he has quite a lot loose, this is a rather unique situation
honestly he has balls to even make another movie, let alone being so wienery about it, he knew he needs some hooks for the audience beyond the simple production quality
so if he decided to release another one, 2 in fact, with another 2 on the burner, well I would bet against a skeptical anon talking about flops out of hiss ass' gut feeling

    >thinking a 3 1/2 - 4 hour sequel to a movie that people were lukewarm to begin with will be as successful as the predecessor.
Audiences always struggle with long movies, even movie theater chains don't like it because there are less showings per day.
    >bu...muh zack snyder justice league success
Not the same, a lot of people paused the movie after a chapter ended and even came back days after because that's how bad the attention span is right now
    >but muh infinity war/endgame did the same
You would have to be really deluded to think people care about avatar the same way they did with capeshit at its peak of popularity.

genuinely you are the deluded one. who the frick gave a shit about top gun in 2022? if you make a big spectacle film, people will go see it. avatar was an absolute phenomena all over the world when it came out and that’s what people want to experience. they don’t care about the story, they care about the visuals and immersion. anyone saying this will flop clearly has no business speaking about the box office and has zero clue what they are talking about

The movie will not flop, just underperform
        >top gun 2
Not a 4 hour movie, easy to sit through because cruise knows what people want to watch and gets to the point
        >avatar was an absolute phenomena all over the world when it came out and that’s what people want to experience
The only thing it had was the cgi, from the very beginning people criticized how weak the movie was without it, hence the endless pocahontas comparison and we're not in that world anymore, tons of movies have come out overstimulating audiences so it's not special anymore.

      >that people were lukewarm to begin with
It literally made 10x its opening weekend. It had better legs than any blockbuster in the last 3 decades outside of Titanic. You have to have overwhelmingly positive word of mouth for that to happen. The notion that people were lukewarm on Avatar is absolutely ludicrous.

Has this hack considered including an intermission? He's acknowledging the writing and plot of his furgay movie is so inconsequential that you can just get up and leave for five minutes at any point and not miss anything important. Long movies are ok, but we all know that this shit is not going to earn the runtime if it's as trite as the first movie from 2009.

Keep in mind that only a third of viewers actually finished streaming the Sneeder cut, and most of the people who watched it were minorities. They are the target audience for these theme park movies.

      >Keep in mind that only a third of viewers actually finished streaming the Sneeder cut,
Why is that relevant? They took years to even acknowledge it existed and by the time it actually came out nobody gave a shit. Your post would've been infinitely better and more credible without throwing in references to an event that only barely has anything to do with this.

        Anonymous

        >Why is that relevant?
It's relevant because it proves that normalgays don't want to sit through a four-hour movie even if they have control of when to pause it. These sorts of long movies were popular in the 40's and 50's when there was nothing else for people to watch, and they included intermissions. Are you going to try to tell me that this blue furgay shit is going to be at the same level as something like Gone with the Wind, Ben-Hur, or Lawrence of Arabia? There's nothing in Avatar about the human condition. It's elevated capeshit. And yes I saw it twice in 2009. People only cared about it because it was such a CGI spectacle. Even back then people were joking about how bad the plot and characters were.

I dont bing watch anything though.

At home maybe because you can pause. You'll lose a few minutes in the cinema. Why not put intermissions back into films if you intend to have such long runtimes? Or maybe just don't whine when no one goes to the cinema to watch it.
