Takes time to travel out to the L2 point and get into a stable orbit around it. Then longer to deploy, test, and calibrate all the complex systems. With billions of dollars on the line and no possibility for repair you don't rush things.
The bigger issue is that it took 25 years and billions of dollars to get it off the pad.

every single scientific discovery leads into something else especially in physics. Every time something new is discovered someone much smarter than you will look at what this means and how it relates to current understanding of physicals or natural phenomena that we know or theorize. This leads to new equations, new discoveries and concepts that can be applied to fields outside physics such as engineering, pharmaceuticals and etc. For example how fricking relevant was the discovery of electricity in the 1700s or the discovery of radioactivity in the 1890s. Just because something seems pointless or meaningless in terms of research doesn't mean it will not yield useless information.
You are probably asking yourself what possible discovery could this yield?
It could help us understand different states of matter in different conditions and how bodies of different mass behave as well as verify theorized concepts or bring light to new ones that could potentially be applied on earth.

That doesn't make much sense, why would a more powerful telescope show bent galaxies? Just because it's looking further back so it has more time to get distorted?

            Anonymous

nothing is distorted. the galaxy is bent due to graviational pull. more resolution makes it look much clearer

Look at how the galaxies are bent, it's in a circular pattern around the focal point of the lens, the light being perceived by the lens is being bent, the actual galaxies aren't bent

Something like that produces a shitton of power, we're talking megapulsars, giant globs of matter shitting out power and energy. It's so fricking massive, that it rivals your mother in mass. So it ends up bending the light that's flowing around it because it's simply so fricking large.

The Science requires that there be something to hold up modern equations in place, otherwise we'd have to re-create physics every single time a picture like that is made. Realistically, our current theories are complete and utter horseshit, held together by spoooOooky Dark Matter, spoooOOokier Dark Engery and israeli lies. You're shown pretty early on in physics why Newton's work doesn't technically hold up, the math doesn't parse with reality. But it still remains useful to us. This is the current field theory, largely bullshit, some truths and a whole heaping mouthful of communist approved Diversity.
Honestly, I'd rather trust Scott Steiner's math than current Science.

they say they can figure out if a exoplanet has an atmosphere and its composition with it. but I'd be more interested in knowing if they can point it to our own planets. if they point it to Neptune or Pluto, will we see any kind of surface detail we haven't seen previously?

I doubt it since Neptune would move out of the way in the time it takes the telescope to do the picture.

yes, but not in the way you want. They can see planets transiting their stars and get some information about them, but it won't actually be able to see continents on an exoplanet or anything like that.
