The movie followed the basic new girl at the academy plotline that they always use to relaunch X-Men in a new medium. The cartoons did it with Kitty and Jubilee and the video game did it with Magma. Because of the popularity of Rogue in the cartoon, they decided to shoehorn her into that role in the movie with largely mixed results. Thats one of the weaker points from the original movies. Rogue should have been an established and powerful member in that movie.
I think the casting was fine but the writing was absolute shit. Rogue is one of the most powerful X-men that exist and they didn't do anything with her.
