I think Jax understands it's all a video game and believes that nothing bad could really happen to anyone and he acts the way he does because he's amused that the others are treating the game seriously. Either he's right and they'll all get to log-off safely eventually or potentially only learn the truth that "if you die in the game, you die in real life"-sorta thing in his final moments.
