Never understood why Dave and Conan were so bitter towards Jay like he held NBC at a gunpoint to get the show.
Was he supposed to pass over the job because they felt entitled to it?

it's because of Carson railing against NBC and Jay. he gained a reputation, which not not totally deserved sticks around in Hollywood

      >Was he supposed to pass over the job because they felt entitled to it?
He DID pass over the job, he even had Conan on his show to hand over the reigns. The point is he publicly gave up the show, and then behind the scenes did everything he could to frick Conan over. NBC helped by giving him A FRICKING CHATSHOW BEFORE A CONAN'S CHATSHOW.

Jay was a company man. He'd probably still be doing the Tonight Show but NBC was pushing him out so Conan could get TTS and not have another Letterman situation. Well NBC is fricking moronic. It was clear that Conan was never going to be an 11:35 host. He's too weird. So Conan gets ass pained that audiences don't like him in the 11:35 slot so NBC kicks him out. Jay keeping his team employed is not shitty. NBC is just completely moronic.

When Carson handed over the reigns he fricking left, he didn't stick around and he certainly didn't try and get a shitty show as a lead-in to the Tonight Show just to frick over the person he just gave it to. Jay was number 1 in his time slot, he COULD have gone to another network, he COULD have told NBC he wasn't giving up TTS. Instead he chose the weasliest of weasley options.

Conans ratings sucked and NBC panicked and offered Leno a shit ton of money for a new show which he took. why should he turn down millions of dollars?

          >Conans ratings sucked
Because his lead-in was another fricking chatshow hosted by Leno. You have to build an audience in tv which is why tv has been atrocious for decades. Leno's ratings when he took over from Carson were bad, when Conan started Late Night his were bad.

This, Jay is a piece of shit.
He was already wealthy beyond most people's wildest dreams. He had already had the tonight show for years.
Instead of just retiring with what scraps of dignity he had left, he just had to try to hog the limelight for an ego boost. He screwed over a younger guy who really wanted the job, and was good at it for no reason.
Whatever disease kills him won't be bad enough.

        >Johnny hated Jay even before he took his job
Johnny soured on Jay when Jay moved right in, started installing his own people and used Johnny's parking spot. Johnny was an egomaniac and thought he could hover around and continue to pull strings post-'retirement'.

Jay was too goddamned savvy to let that shit happen. Whatever else you may think of him, you cannot deny Leno is a sharp businessman and strategist.

If Conan was as cutthroat as Jay learned to be throughout his harsh experience in the business there's no way he would have let NBC frick him over.

Personally, I don't blame Leno for taking a fat purse when it was offered to him, even though I think it was a shit thing to do. Conan and his team should have found a way to out-manoeuver the NBC shitbags that fricked up his show.

        >le Company Man
If the company is paying your salary, you're a company man. The Tonight Show is essentially a long-form advertisement space for whichever celebrities, bands, movies, etc NBC is paid to push, it's not high art. Conan is much funnier than Leno in ny opinion, but he's a gay who didn't understand that he was competing for fancy salesman job, which is why Leno destroyed him (and why Leno edged out Letterman).
For anyone interested, it's worth watching Letterman's interview with Norm on Norm's old podcast and Jay's interviews on Rogan and Marc Maron (as insufferable as Marc Maron is). Letterman and Leno both tell some of the same stories across those three podcasts, and their differing perspectives on the business aspect of showbiz and late night talk shows are really well highlighted. It changed my opinion on the whole issue, I used to be a staunch believer that Conan was in the right

Really, the way to fix it was to just move Tonight Show to NY. Part of the issue with Jay is that his 10PM show killed news affiliates and booked big guests because they pretty much had to since it was a new show.

Jay was the one who said he would retire as well and then went back on it. I don't understand how people can say he's right for straight up saying one thing and then doing everything he can to make sure that thing doesn't happen. If he didn't want to leave he should've said so.

The reason people don't respect Jay is because he went about the whole thing in a two-faced way and let the network push him and Conan around. If he had fought NBC to keep his show in the first place and maybe gone to another network to compete against Conan people wouldn't have a problem with it. But handing it off to Conan only to stick around and then take his job back rubbed people the wrong way

Conan did the same to him to kick things off. Read "The Late Night Wars" if you haven't (and if you're that interested in this to read an entire book about it), Conan and his team successfully maneuvered Leno into "handing over" the show as part of Conan's contract negotiation. Leno didn't like how Conan had fricked him over, and so he fricked him over right back. If Conan didn't want to play two-faced games, then he shouldn't have engaged in two-faced games to begin with

        >Conan and his team successfully maneuvered Leno into "handing over" the show
How *exactly* did they do that, and don't say read the book.

          Anonymous

You really should read the book.
At the height of his popularity, Conan made it a stipulation of his Late Night contract renegotiation that he be given The Tonight Show after the end of his signing (so like 3-5 years, can't remember which). Conan's team threatened to leave to Fox if NBC didn't give him The Tonight Show. NBC was obviously afraid to lose Conan given his ratings, and pressured Leno into making a statement and signing a contract to pass Conan the Tonight Show at the end of Conan's Late Night contract. Conan and his team passed this off as Leno being ready to hand over the reins.
By the end of Conan's contract his ratings had slipped and Leno was in a position to frick Conan over by demanding the lead-in show

Leno, as he repeatedly points out, was the number 1 show in his slot. There was zero reason for him to cave to their demands and hand over the show.

Leno felt the same way. If l you won't read the book, at least read the wikipedia article:
              https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Tonight_Show_conflict
              >Leno likened his removal from The Tonight Show to the end of a relationship, noting that he was loyal and still ended up "heartbroken".[39] From his perspective, NBC's decision made no sense, as his show had remained number one in ratings and consistently brought in money
