>2023 >still unsurpassed guitar whiz
realistically no one could pull off same level of guitar solos as he did. they would have to resort to playback and it would seem unnatural and just cause controversy
>Frank zappa is a better all around composer.
Okay, and? He said guitar whiz, not compsing whiz.
In fact, Frank Zappa himself assigned his most complicated stuff to Steve Vai because he himself couldn't even play that shit.
Frank Zappa is also novelty music for people too arrogant to actually listen to erudite music but also too snob to listen to Jimi Hendrix.
Truly the Tool of his time, an insane cult-leader weirdo who assumed he was a genius because he knew some slightly obscure music theory, just a shame.
They're completely different as composers though. Jimi's work as a sessioner with Little Richard and in other blues and soul bands sounds like it's ideology is not even close to the methods that went into Wowie Zowie and early Mothers of Invetion. Comparing them is honestly kind of moronic even though I do prefer Zappa as a composer. The styles of music they made had different intentions and both made pretty consistent shit at their peaks.
being a "whiz" doesn't mean being on the highest "technical level." It means ingenuity with the instrument. He played it like nobody had before (like with his teeth). "Whiz" has as much to do with creativity as it does technical ability. Sure, there's kids who can play through the fire and flames on a real guitar but couldn't improvise a solo for their lives.
Lol normies don't know shit. Jimi is no better than buddy guy or Freddie king. He had a good band and good songs but his early death kinda overexagerated his legend
Nobody who's been playing electric guitar for more than 10 years thinks Hendrix is unsurpassed. We may recognize him as the father, but not some untouchable milestone. especially in the greater musical world, where there are many jazz/ flamenco guys who'd tuck him in. Jimi was just in the right place at the right time. he took a bunch of blues riffs and cranked up the marshall to an audience of boomer kids who didn't know any better. influential, but not a "whiz." if you want to argue his "feel," then SRV managed to tap-in to the same magic but with greater speed and dexterity. and SRV wasn't even the best blues guitarist when guys like Johnny Winter were walking around. if you study hendrix's solos, you'll find they all operate in the 'pentatonic ladder.' he rarely does anything outside of it and it gets boring (for me, at least) after 4-5 songs. decades of Rolling Stone Magazine publishing their top 100 lists while putting jimi at #1 has done irreversible damage to the mind of normies. everyone is "informed" with the "correct" opinion without listening to just how many talented guitarists are actually out there
Nah that's the opposite problem. The actress was unironically too attractive to be an accurate Janis. The whole appeal of her image was that she was "homely" and almost an easy lay type who became legendary solely due to her voice.
OP pic Jimi is fricking dogshit because Hendrix was a good looking guy while the actor looks like a buck tooth hillbilly who sells catfish on the Bayou.
>while the actor looks like a buck tooth hillbilly who sells catfish on the Bayou.
what the frick were they thinking, Andre 3000 has conquered the "black hipster" thing that Jimi made mainstream by himself, how did they manage to make him look like a villain in House of a 1000 Corpses
tool are pretentious?
nah bro there's nothing pretentious about pretending you're doing some pythagorean alchemy while playing the dullest butt rock ever.
This isn't even an original criticism, it's the main issue people take with Tool and their fans.
Just because you're doing some 12 tone wanking doesn't mean you're not just an even dumber version of Primus, Maynard.
I don’t care about ‘muh Fibonacci sequence dude DMT lmao, open ur third eye maannn’ elements of Tool. They just make good songs with awesome riffs, great drumming, interesting sequences etc. to say the band is bad is lazy and I disagree.
I didn't say they were lazy, I said they were dull. These are two different things.
And dull is a great way to describe Tool (or any number of overly technical bands), because you can dull a blade by sharpening it too much. It doesn't even sound like they're having fun, it's very square, angular music, almost anxious, breathless. I don't care I'm high and tried listening to Schism again and it's just kind of shit, I'm going back to Spacemen 3 now because it massages the right parts of my brain.
>Spacemen 3
Ah, you're just some "muh more obscure basic b***h entry level shit than you" hipster

Different. Trying to quantify "better", well... you're the kind of person that's willing to argue "better" on Cinemaphile. I enjoy both x

this is exactly why people hate tool fans, I just levelled extremely common criticisms (that I happen to agree with) of tool and you're now asking me to elaborate on my aesthethical system on a Cinemaphile post.
Spacemen 3 wanted to make loud music for junkies to take drugs to and that's what they did (and what I'm doing right now, taking drugs and listening to loud guitar music), which means they've hit their intentions to the fullest (and went beyond it, becoming a somewhat influential and giving rise to multiple good bands when they broke up).
Tool wanted to make intellectual music for intellectual people and promote consciousness expansion through their intricate, psychedelic-inspired music, but all they managed to produce is the soundtrack to the fedora-wearer convention, which means they fell short of their own intentions.
So, Spacemen 3i s better, you absolute manchild. Go listen to music made by and for people who enjoy human contact.

...yes anon, smoking weed is being a "drugfiend".
This is a very normal, adult opinion. Even using the word "drugfiend" at all is very regular behavior, not a 300 year old angloid mind-disease which went a bit too far.
He’s just massively overrated brother, but that’s how all media is, you gotta dig to find the true gold, nothing on the surface is going to be better then the thing only weirdos like.
True enough, everything builds on everything else so I don’t see your point, the rock and roll that jimmy heard while in Nam influenced him, and that artist’s first time hearing blues influenced him, and on and on.
Lol no watch Clapton just try to keep up with Freddie King. There was an insane amount of talented guitar players that normies don't know. Rory Gallagher for one
His studio work is also messier than any of those three, it's part of the point. That's like complaining Glenn Gould is messy when compared to other Bach interpreters or complaining that Thelonious Monk never hits notes at the right time.
>santana
The most boring rock and roll guitarist of all time. You are right though. Jimmy Page always pisses me off too. Very sloppy and almost kind of choppy.
Hendrix arrived at the time of drugged out musicians enamored by black American music. Had he been a white guy, his fame wouldn't have surpassed Alvin Lee.

his music is too goofy

You got it wrong, he could play but he couldn't write

Zappa was based and funnypilled, but only spergs unironically like his music.
He is total dogshit hidimg behind a million sound fx lmao he cant play guitar for shit.
It's pretty insane how good hendrix was, and he had the wizard eddie kramer behind him too.
I love zappa but hendrix is a way better guitarist. Of course putting jimi against zappas consumate composing zappa wins but frick off
>realistically no one could pull off same level of guitar solos as he did.

you do realize there's an entire ocean of kids that are on a technical level better players than Hendrix could ever be?
being a "whiz" doesn't mean being on the highest "technical level." It means ingenuity with the instrument. He played it like nobody had before (like with his teeth). "Whiz" has as much to do with creativity as it does technical ability. Sure, there's kids who can play through the fire and flames on a real guitar but couldn't improvise a solo for their lives.
"With his teeth"???
You sure it wasn't his fretting hand doing the work there?
Spastic
people can play better than jimi but nobody could play like this
His tone is utter trash like his playing.
tasteless. he took rock/blues to heights never seen before.
stevie ray was better
The guy from Pink Floyd is better
David Gilmour can't write songs though.
Better than Roger "MUH DADDY MUH WAR" Waters
Lol normies don't know shit. Jimi is no better than buddy guy or Freddie king. He had a good band and good songs but his early death kinda overexagerated his legend
>no better than buddy guy or freddie king

even Prince was better at guitar than Jimi
You're either 60 or 16.

Odd. That VH1 biopic got use, at least cover versions.
>Jimi Hendrix biopic

That unironically saved him from being sent to Vietnam
Janis Joplin biopic from 30 Rock had the same problem

If you're not willing to perform a child sacrifice of your own son for talent, you're not the greatest.
He was past his prime at that point. It did manage to inspire two great songs though
They could have Bob Dylan doing All Along The Watch Tower. He did write it afterall, so this must be the definitive version:
?feature=shared
>He did write it afterall, so this must be the definitive version:
In fact, Dylan himself officially proclaimed Hendrix' version the definitive one.
is that ODB?
I thought he was dead
its a pity. that's some great likeness.
optioning life rights and music rights are two completely different things.
>NOOOO JIMI SUCKS BECAUSE HE WAS LE Black
That's why he buckbroke the guy who was considered the best guitarrist of his time on stage once, right?
He’s just massively overrated brother, but that’s how all media is, you gotta dig to find the true gold, nothing on the surface is going to be better then the thing only weirdos like.
any guitarrist post Hendrix owes to his style, whether they like it or not

>best guitarrist of his time
Pop guitarists are adorable.
>wants to be a snob
>still picks the obvious meme answer
Hendrix is much closer to Yamandu who is much better than De Lucia.
Let's face it anon, the novelty of finding electrical chords is what made them legends
Watch him play Les Paul like with Richad Pennyman
Lol no watch Clapton just try to keep up with Freddie King. There was an insane amount of talented guitar players that normies don't know. Rory Gallagher for one
i always found his live work kind of messy compares to clapton, santana, peter green etc.

Peaked with Cream.
