He is starting a new imprint over at Image with a bunch of other DC guys, and they are all going to be exclusive to that imprint. Tomasi, Manapul, and others are also a part of it.

He's been on the outs with Lee/upper management ever since he got blamed for the Justice League movie bombing. They don't really promote his stuff anymore to the point where he seems to have last his power as draw (seriously seems like barely anybody knew what he's been doing the last year or two even as his comics were coming out). It's obvious that he's not welcome at DC anymore so frick it, he's out.

Movies based on his works flopped and Gunn is using King and Morrison's works as inspiration instead of his.

No point in pretending he cares about superhero comics if he can't get royalties from them, hence why he's trying to launch a new creator owned imprint. IIRC Geiger as already been picked up as a TV show so he's praying the rest of his imprint gets picked up.

He wrote comics when they were the ghetto of entertainment and many were damn good. His modern output is dogshit but the revisionist history is insane here.

Tom king has never written a good comic. At least Morrison’s comics are a good basis.

But I don’t trust Gunn to do anything but what Bendis did and enter Superman’s world with a joke about his costume and utter disrespect for the character. Anything based on King’s comics is a psyop.

          >when they were the ghetto of entertainment and many were damn good.
What is that supposed to mean? He only wrote comics as a gateway to tv. It's not like he was writing for some indie publisher. I don't remember a single good comic he wrote.

Nobody gets royalties from movies and shit anymore. Marvel always paid shit royalties while DC was better because it was a personal mission of Levitz's while he was president/publisher. Once he got booted, though, the royalty structure changed so now DC pays shit royalties as well. There's a reason that Gillen once said you make way more selling 10,000 copies of a creator-owned work than you do selling ten times as much of a work-for-hire book. The only people doing Big Two books are those who are really passionate about the characters (increasingly rare), those who are using it to advertise themselves for when they go creator owned, and those who are just doing it as a sidegig to their TV/YA novel shit.

We already saw this with Goyer. He went co-writing Ian Karkull, a guy who showed up like maybe 3 times prior to his arc in JSA. to saying if you know Martian Manhunter you're a virgin.

At this point it's obvious Johns does not care about comics themselves anymore. He only cares about the money he gets from his trades selling (due to movies being named after them) and characters he created being used in other media adaptations.

It's crazy to me how DC kept rejecting John's pitches. Isn't he like super popular? Why would you let him do a Watchmen sequel then reject all his other ideas? Scott Kolins revealed the other day that he and Johns proposed a Flash Rogues regular series and DC turned it down.

Johns has a high page rate, any established talent does. The reason the Big 2 is made up of almost entirely Z-list talent nobody likes is because they work for pennies. Marvel and DC need to cut costs because their comics don't sell, but instead of shrinking the line and investing in talent that sells they are dropping popular creators and replacing them with nobodies. Marvel and DC need to publish 60+ comics a month because they just do okay.

By 2011 Johns had too much on his plate. IIRC back then he said he could only handle two ongoings at a time. First he had JL and Aquaman while working on Batman Earth One here and there, then BEO came out and he left Aquaman, he turned his attention to JL and Forever Evil, then just had JL and BEO once Forever Evil was over.

And then he hasn't been able to get a single book out on time by himself since the Rebirth oneshot. Doomsday Clock too so long to come out it outright ruined Rebirth, Shazam had delays just about every single issue, JSA has taken a year to get 6 issues out, etc. Flashpoint Beyond only came out on time because he had Adams and Sheridan doing most of the actual scripting, and the Stargirl mini only came out on time because he and Nauck had been working on it since fricking 2021.

Making comics or characters with the sole purpose of getting picked up by a studio is bad, yes.

It's why 75% of Image's books from 2012-2018 were shit and never got past ~10 issues, everybody wanted their book to be the next TWD and when studios didn't option it, they stopped caring about it by the second volume and put it on a "hiatus". Hell it's why Bennett and Aftershock shilled Animosity so hard, it was optioned early on by Legendary so they made spin off books and kept the main one going until #28 despite all of them selling and reading like shit.

Why did John’s bring back The sidekicks of Joirman, Blue Beetle and Mr Scarlet.
No one gives a damn about Mr Scarlet, so Pinky a waste.
Jaimie Reyes is Blue Beetle legacy so no reason to bring Sparky back.
Hourman legacy already has Rick Tyler plus the Android Hourman.
    We didn’t need Tick Tock.
And finally, why bring back Boy Nlue and the Blue Boys. We only needed Little Miss Redhead.
I don’t mind the Newsboy Legion clones but that’s too many worthless
    white body sidekicks.
