it's a massive shame that all the best actors who are really passionate about the industry emerging from the 20th century are now hitting the wall hard or dying/retiring. The new wave is just popular from social media manipulation and not pure star power like Cruise. The actors who became famous before social media were truly built different.

Because Hollywood specifically wants to kill the idea of a movie STAR aka people who can command high salaries and other demands. Industry has learned you can sell anyone as a good actor to mouthbreathing masses and so they keep a roster of known names, but never let them get too big. They want to have well known names to carry their movies, but nothing more.
The competition is weak and has been for a classic action movie. The demand is there, and this movie managed to deliver. That's really it: a quality action flick released at the right time.
I think the word of mouth is huge for it too because people were surprised it was good. Nobody besides Tom was asking for this and there have been lots of failed nostalgia grabs recently, this is the only one that feels like a real movie
