>Just call him Captain Thunder at this point. >Fricking this.

>Just call him Captain Thunder at this point
>Fricking this. They used that name in Flashpoint. Why are they so apprehensive to use it anywhere else?
>because the Spanish-language market is the second largest audience American movies are sold to, and there's already a comic book Capitan Trueno, who had a movie as recently as 2011
>so it's unlikely they can get that trademark either, which makes regionalization a pain

Here's my idea. Instead of translating the name to Spanish, call him "Capitan Thunder" in Spanish too. I've seen them do that with Japanese titles sometimes, where the title is still in English instead of being a Japanese translation of the English word. Or, how we as Americans call a Japanese sword a "katana" instead of a "Japanese sword." This kind of thing happens all the time where the name is left untranslated to give it an exotic appeal, so I can see it working here.

I don't see how someone can own the right to a name. Can I not have a character named Bruce Wayne in anything I make because that's Batman?

        >I don't see how someone can own the right to a name.
They don't own the name, they own the trademark.
DC can't use Captain Marvel in any promotional material, such as on the cover of comic books or merchanidse. It's been this way since the 70's when Marvel first snatched up the rights to use the name themselves. Billy was going by the name Captain Marvel for years whilst his comics ran under the name Shazam. It's only been been recently that they've dropped the name for brand synergy.

He originally WAS called Captain Thunder, so it would just be returning to his roots. I'm actually astonished that DC kept calling him Captain Marvel for as long as they did and didn't foresee this being a problem. Fricking idiots

        >He originally WAS called Captain Thunder
Technically, Captain Thunder was an original character DC invented before they obtained the rights to Fawcett Comics' characters, acting as an expy for Captain Marvel that Superman could fight. Though they would end up using the Captain Thunder name for Flashpoint Billy Batson's secret identity, so there's precedence established.

may as well give him back to marvel.

I can't see Shazam fitting in Marvel at all. Meanwhile, he and his entire supporting cast are a pretty natural fit at DC.

They've got the more fleshed out magical corner, he's got the relation to Wonder Woman since he draws his power mostly from her gods, he was the original rival to Superman, Mary Marvel was the original inspiration to Supergirl so it makes sense that they'd be best friends, and Billy is superheroic enough to fit in with the JSA, while still belonging to the dark magical world too. Plus he's got the, "Fun, escapist power fantasy vibe," to him that most of DC's biggest characters have.

Literally the only thing going against him, sadly, is branding.

Idk, Johns' nu52 and the current Waid run are both good.

And you gain a lot with Captain Marvel being in the DC universe, like Billy and the others looking up to Superman, the aforementioned Supergirl and Mary Marvel friendship, Billy and Black Adam being on the JSA, Shazam being in the Quintessence, and Black Adam's whole entire thing since the early 2000's.

Not really their fault DC has mostly sucked with their B/C/D-listers for the past decade now.

Black Adam has more connections now since he is linked to the other ancient Egypt characters like Hawkman and Dr Fate.

Marvel does not have nearly as many ancient Egypt characters, but most of them are villains. Adam could be the original hero that fought off Apocalypse and Rama Tut. Maybe stopped an ancient Deviants invasion or two.

Fawcett seems a little more cartooney than most superhero settings. But that is probably from mostly missing out on 80s and 90s era development since DC always made Shazam stuff a very third rate priority.

If Billy was a main character in either universe then he definitely would have had a dark gritty rebranding in the late 80s or 90s. Most of the goofy villains would have been dropped, and there would be a whole new list of 90s era grimdark edgy villains, with maybe 1-2 surviving the decade.

They could. Disney didn't want to use the name "Slave I" anymore for Boba Fett's ship, but they also didn't want to actually change the name and risk pissing off neckbeards, so in toys and stuff they just call it "Boba Fett's Starship." So it can continue to be called Slave I by anyone who cares but they dodge around calling it by name. Even in the show Boba said "my Firespray ship" which is clever enough, it's like if Han called the Falcon "my YT-1300 freighter".

What i actually meant was the future state for Captain Marvel, like a better timeline for the series. If DC never jeopardized him and his Shazam cast.

I know what you meant, I just ignored it and focused on the image.

    Call him Captain Miracle.

Has the same vibe as Captain Marvel, fits all his sidekicks (Mary Miracle, Captain Miracle Jr, Lt. Miracle, Hoppy the Miracle Bunny, Uncle Miracle) and serves as a nod to the Marvelman/Miracleman days.

They could call him K-mart Superman.

Really any new name works better than a totally made up word for a name.
