no, it's the closest thing to the original that doesn't cause trademark problems. it sounds even dumber than the other suggestions. "the captain". captain of what, asswipe?
>no, it's the closest thing to the original that doesn't cause trademark problems.
Right, yes, you're starting to get it. The Captain as a shortening of Captain Marvel, but also as the leader (Captain) of the Marvel Family, numbnuts.
you can't trademark a generic term like "the guardian" or "the captain"
>no, it's the closest thing to the original that doesn't cause trademark problems.

literally nobody ever has been captain of a fricking family dumbass
>literally nobody ever has been captain of a fricking family dumbass
Yeah, it's not actually literally my brain damaged friend. Tony Soprano was not actually a Skipper. And yet...
It really sucks that Marvel wienerblocked Captain Marvel out of his name. It’d be like if we suddenly couldn’t call Superman Superman. And I’m sorry but any character in Marvel canon literally named “whatever Marvel” is fricking stupid. The Captain is probably the best compromise but seriously frick Marvel for that bit of corporate bullshittery.
what happened was National Comics, the Superman publishers, decided that Fawcett Comics' Captain Marvel was a Superman expy and sued
so they made it impossible for Fawcett to make the kind of profits they wanted (Captain Marvel had been their best-seller, but also the best seller at times, and those times were long gone) by 1953, so Fawcett settled and agreed not to publish Captain Marvel again, and that was the last time they did
10 years later in 1963 Atlas Comics changed its name to Marvel Comics - after Marvel Mystery Comics, which was published by the same company a few months before there even was a Captain Marvel
in 1967 Marvel Comics introduced their own Captain Marvel, in part an obvious homage to a long-gone character nobody ever expected to see again; they were sued by someone else who'd taken the name for his own character a year earlier, and he settled for the equivalent of $42,000 today in return for the trademark (his sales were not good)
prior to this Fawcett had wanted to revive the character but due to their settlement with National/DC, could not do so
in 1972, National rented Captain Marvel from Fawcett (they would buy the character and the rest of Fawcett's comics catalog outright in 1977, the year they officially became DC Comics)
National Comics was by then owned by Warner Bros which was owned by Kinney National, and somebody got the bright idea to sue Marvel Comics over the name, because they didn't know how trademark or copyrights work any better than you do, and apparently because Jack Kirby thought it was a good idea (Kirby also thought working for DC was a good idea at the time, an opinion he would later change)
both the show and the comic book produced by National/DC in the 70s were always titled Shazam, with only the comic book using the sub "Captain Marvel" until Marvel sent a C&D and the two companies agreed a settlement - DC continues to publish but couldn't use the name for marketing
>alternate universe where Marvel somehow got the rights to the Fawcett heroes instead of DC
what do you think Marvel would do? this is an interesting what if.
The funny thing is they can literally reprint the public domain fawcett issues if they wish. With the name on the cover of the solo titles (as in not the Whiz comics issues)
>Captain Thunder >Captain Thunder Jr. >Mary Thunder. >Thunderworld Adventures
Now we're talking. This should be their new names. It actually sounds iconic and commanding. The Thunder Family are not the be fricked with. Think of all the cheesy weather/storm puns. I love it.
How come they had to change his name but not Ultraman? I know the DC one is older but I'm pretty sure the Japanese one has more money riding on it's shoulders in Asia relative to a less popular Superman villain.
No name that any of you have ever come up with sounds even remotely good. "The Captain" is the closest thing to a solution.

The Champion might still run into issues since Marvel has the trademark for Champions
I don't know how big a difference "The" and that "s" will make
it causes trademark problems
you can't trademark a generic term like "the guardian" or "the captain"
literally nobody ever has been captain of a fricking family dumbass

>italians are people
get the frick out
This. I don’t know why people always want to change shit. The captain is the only good thing waid has canonized in this last two years.
"The Champion" sounds even more like skirting around copyright than "The Captain".

>copypasta
Ruining the interwebz since 1991
That's a lot of words for "we can't call Captain Marvel that anymore because of Marvel Comics"
>which is what I originally said, dipshit
idiot
finish school
Can't understand why they keep trying to rename Captain Marvel.
>alternate universe where Marvel somehow got the rights to the Fawcett heroes instead of DC
what do you think Marvel would do? this is an interesting what if.

Which way, Cinemaphile?
>Champion Marvel
>Captain Whiz
>Thunder Captain
>The Champ
I dig it
Captain Eternity
>Captain Thunder
>Captain Thunder Jr.
>Mary Thunder.
>Thunderworld Adventures
Now we're talking. This should be their new names. It actually sounds iconic and commanding. The Thunder Family are not the be fricked with. Think of all the cheesy weather/storm puns. I love it.
awful, sorry
As opposed to what? The Captain? Shazam? Captain Thunder sounds like a hero name.
A bootleg one, it lacks gravitas
Tbf Captain Marvel sounds like a bootleg superhero name too
You're way outta line!
I'll admit it sounds like something a Legionnaire would come up with but that's part of the charm.
Captain thunder was going to be his orginal name
Unironically sounds good
Red Captain?
All of these name are fricking dreadful just call him captain marvellous and be done with it
He's Captain Marvel.
Captain is fine, it's just a shortening of his previous name.
How about Commander Captain?
Does that sound good?
Boy II Man
Shazam!
I’m glad Eugene, Pedro and Darla replaced these three.
i only care about Darla to be honest.
he is captain marvel
'Champion' of what?
of shazam
Captain Thunder? Captain Wonder? Captain Champion? Captain Lightning? Thunderman?
Captain Thunder Champion could be cool
Johns absolutely ruined him with the New 52 and the movie.
Those were good though. Besides they already reverted Billy's personality
How come they had to change his name but not Ultraman? I know the DC one is older but I'm pretty sure the Japanese one has more money riding on it's shoulders in Asia relative to a less popular Superman villain.
