Just finished season two of the Boondocks.

Just finished season two of the Boondocks. It's beyond me why people are complaining about season 4 apparently having worse social commentary, there was a giant decline between season 1 and season 2 already. The second season completely lost the heart the first one had and it's just sitcom shit and absurdism. Sure, it's fine, but there's nothing that hits like season 1 did and all. Not the biggest fan of the change in Riley's voice direction either

Most of the comedy is made for black people to go "Oh, that's so true".

Also, Season 1 is the funniest.

Season 1 touched on more serious themes and had comedy as a side note.
More subtle and to the point with the message.
The first season implied an upcoming war between the goverment guy vs Huey which never happened.
Or it did, as Huey tried to escape to Canada with Ruckus and the latter was banned from it because it had Obama real size model sheets hit with a rock.
Season 2 literally has no plot aside from crazy adventures that go more absurd as seasons go.
Season 4 didn't have the original creator involved and you can tell.

Boondocks was expected to come back but that it is dead it's the best possible thing. It would roughtly get one season nowadays with the cancel culture around.

Yeah, I agree also. I think the first episode of the second season is about they going to the movies, right? And a lot of that episode feels like is just bait for the clips for the premiers, like "huey will have this epic fight with the racist homie, i can't wait".

First season is a lighting in a bottle honestly, is such a wild balance between being able to bring light towards the system injustices and racial bias without playing the victim and at same time making criticism towards the black culture in general and still having a lot of heart about it. The Riley episode about learning how to paint perfectly encapsulates that, since it does criticizes the entire stupid deal with vandalism and how is inbuilt in popular black culture, but also shows that there are better alternatives for artistic expression as long as you give those people the right opportunities and has an amazing ending that ties in with a pretty solid and still funny emotional moment. And even trows here and there some commentary on the validity of art and such. Every single episode of season one is like that. Season two is funny, but is just kinda it.

Season 1 of the boondocks has this really dreamy, melancholic atmosphere to it. It's fantastic. It reminds me of the first 2 seasons of The Simpsons but way funnier and with none of the jank.

It's true. I still like S2 and 3 but I dunno, man. Not sure how to describe it but it feels like they went from writing satire to fully embracing what they were satirizing while also pretending to be above it. Everything from S2 onwards feels unnecessarily louder and more "in-your-face" compared to the more down-to-earth feel of the first season described here . There's still a bunch of good episodes and decent moments that almost reach S1 standards (like the Gangstalicious scene) but nothing really reaches this level ever again.

Have any of you ever been outside or just looked out of your window while it was raining with this song playing? It feels incredible.

i don't remember which season was which, but Obama basically killed the show. They could no longer play the victim, so they just made half-hearted parody about people dick-riding him while he does frick all. Plus they couldn't go back to the Bush-bashing well anymore.

Idk that dodgeball episode is a fav or mine
I don’t think EVERY episode needs to be about social injustice

Season 3 was fine. I was just very annoyed by the finale being a fricking parody of 24 of all things. Like that's the last thing McGruder wanted to do with those characters? A 24 parody?

Considering what the episode was about he had to wrap it under a heavy parody of another show to distract certain suits.

Season one, McGruder had no clue what people would attach to. He and the team were just tossing things into the wind. By season 2, they knew it was a shit and leaned into some elements that they thought people liked. I agree that Season 2 does not hit as hard as Season One. They let go some of the more emotional elements that you get in episodes like Riley Wuz here, Wingmen, and the Passion of Reverend Ruckus in favor of more Riley/Robert shenanigans. That emotional heart set it apart from other adult shows. I think they wanted more laughs.

I wouldn't say season 4 just had worse social commentary, everything about the writing was worse. If you think the drop from season 1 to 2 is a giant decline, then the drop from 3 to 4 is just a bottomless cliff.

Frick you OP for promoting it.

I really love this show, but are non-black minorities even allowed to? Or is it like a grey zone compared to whites?

I think most people already know this. It drops off more and more in favor of pure comedy, and general satire as the show progresses. Season 2 has traded much of the real commentary and comfy moments, but it's still very much there. By season 3 & 4 it nearly drops all of it (of course barring a few isolated moments) in favor of pure comedy. Although what makes season 3 work compared to 4 is that the season 3 comedy is nearly at its peak to make up for it. By season 4 the comedy is hit or miss or done-to-death, and all the comfy-ness of season 1 is gone.
