The film could be an allegory for many things, not just religion.
Some said it's an allegory of the creative process with a filmmaker releasing a movie (the baby) and the critics (the crowd of strangers in the film) first celebrating its arrival and then trashing it, beating it senseless.

Oh absolutely, but thats more of a secondary reading of the film, in that sense it has a lot of layers. I'm talking people who didn't get the base allegory though or rather felt they were the only ones who got it
