For about 75% of the film, I was sure the twist was going to be that this guy was the main character under the mask imagining himself as Tom Cruise's character because he hated himself and his station in life and Kurt Russell had to get him to accept himself and let go of the delusion of being the alpha

by the wide-grinned aloofness of Vanilla Sky's MC and his obsession with a woman he briefly knew
It requires some level of empathy. He's obsessed with her because he's obsessed with himself. He rejects the woman who genuinely loved him because he's so high on himself that he loves the idea that he can have any woman due to his looks and his wealth. The woman he obsesses over and chooses as the object for his digital life is the one woman he couldn't have, the last woman he met before he realized that the life he knew was over and he had fricked up majorly.

        >He rejects the woman who genuinely loved him
        Who? Cameron Diaz?

          Anonymous

Yep. They were in love but he couldn't settle down because he was on high on being the hot playboy billionaire. His whole fantasy he signed up for was him coping with the loss of his looks and his love, wishing it went his way and he didn't have to face what he actually did, which was frick up a good life for the sake of short-lived vanity.

            Anonymous

Come on dude. Cameron's character was a bpd nightmare hell, the type of woman that wakes you up with an amazing blowjob, makes you a breakfast and then when you are leaving from work she tries to ram you with her car on the highway because you didn't respond to her text for 10 minutes. Sex with a bpd chick is incredible but it's not worth it man. His obsession with Penelope was more healthy than Cameron's obsession with him.

              Anonymous

              >Cameron's character was a bpd nightmare hell
She was no crazier than he was, and most importantly, she liked to spend time with him. She liked him for him. She loved him and he loved her, which is why he cared to try to make her jealous.
              >His obsession with Penelope was more healthy than Cameron's obsession with him.
His obsession with Penelope was just hunting down the next new pussy, and as soon as the accident happened and his face was scarred, she had no interest in him and thought he was a huge creep. When he retreads the memories objectively, he realizes that in his AI fantasy, he made Penelope represent the unatainable, perfect romance he had been seeking his whole life, and Cameron Diaz was the real love he overlooked and regretted losing

Not really. You should watch the movie again. The technician says to David that Sofia (Penelope) really did love him and she never recovered from his death. This is transposed with her coming to his funeral and crying, and the technician says that she did believe in love at first sight.

She didn't abandon him. He locked himself away from the world. I think you are misremembering the movie and basing your judgement on that. The actual message is that their love was real, true love on first sight and he lost it because "it's the little things David".

I think you're misremembering it. They explained that the fantasy he was living in started after he passed out after the night at the club. That night, Penelope was rejecting him hard and was extremely uncomfortable around him, now that he had lost his looks. There was no love between them. She wanted to frick him when he looked like Tom Cruise but didn't want anything to do with him after the accident. He went after her when he thought he could have her and couldn't accept that his attraction to her and any other woman but Cameron Diaz was that shallow and fragile.
If you don't think that's accurate, why the frick would he have "locked himself away from the world" while also being in mutual love with the woman of his dreams? He went to kill himself because love was unavailable to him after the one woman who genuinely loved him killed herself in a fit of passion

nta but i watched it 3 times and don't really agree with this interpretation at all.
the night at the club she is obviously put off because tom is outright insulting her and jason lee because of how sorry he feels for himself.

                >There was no love between them. She wanted to frick him when he looked like Tom Cruise but didn't want anything to do with him after the accident.
this can't be true. at the end in the elevator, tech support tells him specifically that though she never saw him again, she mourned for him and she never fully recovered after his death. nobody was more devastated by his death than she was.
this is not the behavior of someone who has put a fling behind them.
                >he cared to try to make her jealous
tbf he isn't firm enough with diaz, but he doesn't intentionally make her jealous. he tells her explicitly to not leave messages on his sleep machine because it's too committal, and when she shows up at the party he tells her "i didn't invite you". him flirting with sofia right in front of her was an attempt to finally get the message across of "im not interested in a serious relationship" without having to actually man up and sit her down for an awkward conversation.
                >She was no crazier than he was
it's not mentally stable behavior to drive your car off a bridge because your frick buddy won't reciprocate your feelings. tom's only crazy action of killing the cruz/diaz hybrid was induced by being constantly bombarded by false memories and a failing simulation so he couldn't tell reality and dreams apart anymore.

                >nobody was more devastated by his death than she was.
Who else could be affected by it? He was otherwise alone in the world and she was the last person he had any kind of connection to
                >him flirting with sofia right in front of her was an attempt to finally get the message across of "im not interested in a serious relationship" without having to actually man up and sit her down for an awkward conversation.
Have you ever been in a relationship? Him making her jealous is an ego thing. He wanted to verify to himself that she cared enough about him to be hurt if he flirted with another woman. It ended up backfiring because she cared so much about him that she couldn't stand the idea, and was willing to die with him
                >tom's only crazy action of killing the cruz/diaz hybrid was induced by being constantly bombarded by false memories and a failing simulation
He's crazy from the start of the film. He's a megalomaniac borderline sociopath who fricks his best friend over throughout the film because the only thing he cares about is being desired, ultimately because he wants to be loved. It's when he realizes that he had that in Cameron Diaz that it hits him hard enough that, like her, the grief of losing it drove him towards suicide.

                Anonymous

I think you completely misread her relationship and the movie's theme. I assume you are young and naive and I don't mean it in an insulting way. Diaz was a batshit insane girl and Cruise didn't want her. It's very clearly communicated.

Spoken like a true virgin incel who has never had to deal with a crazy chick like this. If you had, you'd know that kind of b***h is not only as scary in reality, but chicks like that are incapable of genuine love - particularly the two-way kind.

They love you so intensely but it feels more like they love the idea of loving you than actually loving you. Maybe that's not the right way to put it but there is a middle man in their brain between you and their love. Normal women love you conditionally, improve yourself, earn money, do what you love, have respect and they will follow. The crazy bipolars love you unconditionally because they are afraid of abandonment. It's very scary what they can do in reality.

They are Prima Donnas playing the lead part in their own little romantic melodrama that is their life, and it's all about them. You're just a glorified extra.

for me the real emotion of the movie is tom realizing he killed himself because of how decimated his life was after the accident. i actually didn't like his character much at all, he was a spoiled genetic lottery winner, but then when it got to that part and showed that he killed himself completely alone, i was just fricking demolished. the love story was almost an afterthought; the real heartbreaker was how this guy lost everything and died miserably.

      >Also pre-crash Tom reminded me of Patrick Bateman
bale actually took inspiration for his american psycho performance from seeing tom cruise on a talk show:

I've got to hand it to Cruise et al, for having the vision to recognise the potential, take the original foreign version and turn it into Vanilla Sky.

I don't recall the original having the shit about the Monet paintings referenced in the US title. Not a bad detail that was either added or expanded upon to nice visual effect, and makes a nice transition.

Do you people even know that this is a shot for shot remake of a Spanish movie? Nothing impressive about copying someone's homework

Normiegays don't know that a lot of films have been adapted from originals of varying success elsewhere. I've got mad respect for people who actually improve upon it - or even equal it for my native language, budget factors be damned.

I usually like one more than the other, but often like both, or can at least respect the inferior one for what it is. The Ring is a better-known example of giving a foreign film a nice polish.

I was waiting to see that pretentious preddit psedu response. I normally think remakes are fricking dogshit, but Vanilla Sky is fricking primo and kino. Abvre Los Ojos had no soul nor did it make me feel empathy like I did the latter. I mention the empathy because our protagonist was an unlikeable douchebag, yet we felt for him at the end.
