Just started watching this show, surprised at how much I was laughing given I have seen almost nothing funny come out of the last decade.

Absolutely. I revisit the series once or twice a year, and it's just a huge bundle of fun from start to finish. Some of my favorite episodes appear in the third season.

Toast of Tinseltown is good for a few laughs, but feels a lot different. Putting the character in a closer-to-modern setting just felt awkward. It won't spoil your enjoyment of Matt Berry by any stretch, but Toast of London is just peak comfy.

    Yes it's funny every season.
My favourite bit is when the taxi driver pulls into a petrol station to fill up. Toast gets out and says "you can't fill up on a fare!" and the driver just pumps petrol onto him while telling him to frick off.
    Also HMS PENETRATOR.

Matt Berry is a genius. I'd recommend also Snuff Box and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

Just finished the second episode. Is this show just bad things happening to an unpleasant person? Why does British comedy have to be so negative?

matt knows how to play the game, why do you think there's a black woman so prominent in the advertising?

Jane Plough (pronounced like Brian Clough, the sportsman) is an all time great comic character. She has that Super Hans magic of being completely insane but treating the relatively straight man characters as if she's the straight man. In fact, Toast as a whole thrives on that dynamic. Every character thinks he/she is the straight man.
