One of the best and most influencial Series of all time, but with declining quality towards the end. And also a serious crush on young Gillian Anderson

Not OP but just yesterday started the 2nd season, I like it so far, altough it makes me sad to be watching it so much time after it finished, missing all the discussions about it.
Same thing happened with Arrow, from what i've seen it had some good threads

        >Favorite episode?
It has been so long since I've watched the show, and I didn't do so very religiously, that only a few details of three episodes are in my memory. I had to look up the episode names but Field Trip, Agua Mala and Arcadia.

Arcadia sticks out for me the most for the humor. From their aliases to Mulder's antics while trying to provoke something to happen. Punkshit, anti-authoritarian young me never even had to worry about HOA rules but to this day I still laugh when I see godawful looking wicker furniture.

Are you sure you only watched season 6? Because all three episodes you named are from that.
The correct answer is "anything with the Lone Gunmen."

Had to do the math. I was probably around six when the show first started airing. I'm sure I saw some early (and later) episodes but season 6 was 1998 which was probably around the time I really started finding myself. It was when I first got into PC gaming (3DO's a "Army Men", "Starcraft" and "Quake 3" all came out around that time). Computers in general, really. I was probably just learning about IRC, the Warez scene, early RATs like Sub7 and Cult of the Dead Cow's Bo/Bo2k, and so on.

Little me, and even teen me, never gave much of a shit about TV/Film. I'd rather play outside or on the computer. I was (and still am) pretty heavy into all sorts of music. Early streaming radio sites like SomaFM, Wazee, DigitalGunfire and Winamp's built-in stream finder thingy all helped with that. Late 30's me is playing catch-up; watching some older series or finally getting around to films regarded as classics(12 Angry Men, The Seventh Seal and Lost Highway were recent watches). Also trying to keep up with some of the better "TV" of recent years. Most recently Shogun; Fargo, Ash vs Evil Dead, Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul, and True Detective before that.

There's a lot of art out there, and not enough lifetimes to appreciate it all, but I'm working on it regardless.

I'll correct myself that "Lost Highway" probably doesn't belong in "classics." Just another weird film that weird people enjoy, I guess. But weird is up my alley. Bob Flanagan's "Sick" (which a buddy of mine had a copy of). Took a minute before I realized I already knew who he was from Nine Inch Nail's "Happiness in Slavery" music video. Waters' "Pink Flamingos." Miike's "Ichi the Killer."

But I guess all of us here are probably a little... "off?"

That one where Mulder is in California tracking a group of vampires. Wish we had more of 'Mulder going solo' episodes, had a nice feeling to it.

serviceable monster-of-the-week series quickly derailed by female lead's pregnancy that turned it into an ufo-conspiracy-the-gubment-controls-everything mess which the internet, at the time, cranked up to 11.

the original series is nostalgically adorable at this point and the 2 "later" seasons are kind of nice in a high-school-reunion way but it also demonstrates that society has passed the series by.

Scully was already filling that role by S9. Reyes or whatever her name is didn't need to be there at all. You could remove her from the story entirely and it wouldn't make a shit of difference.
Also Doggett is based and I will die on that hill.

IIRC Anderson wanted her role in the show reduced and that's why Reyes was introduced. I did like the dynamic flipping from Scully being the skeptic to Doggett being the skeptic and viewing Scully as the unhinged schizo.

You're in for the X-Files officially being reopened. Serious answer:
    >11/10 chemistry between Duchovny and Anderson with a lot of development for each character
    >good recurring characters
    >you'll recognize a lot of one off characters because their actors made appearances in this show before they became more popular (Hank, Walter and Jesse from Breaking Bad are all in different episodes because Bravince was a writer for The X-Files; Amanda from the Saw movies is also in an episode)
    >very comfy settings and 90s nostalgia
    >you'll learn a lot about conspiracies and paranormal stuff, if you weren't already into that kind of thing
    >mytharc is good until a certain point, I won't spoil it but generally the less you know about the mytharc and the characters involved with it and their motives the more entertained you will be
    >monster of the week episodes are a good mix between creepy, gross, funny, serious and plausible; they are formulaic but it's a successful formula

A great show with some pretty bad episodes sprinkled here and there, but all are worth watching at least once. Classic characters that you will come to know and care about and be invested in their stories and arcs. Then two final seasons that are jarring and have more mediocre/bad episodes than good, but still some good stuff in there.

    >what am I in for?

to me the first seasons of this show is some of the most beautiful things I got to witness in life

the masterful atmospheric lighting, the nature and small town settings, the organic look of film, the soulful synth soundtrack, the 90s nostalgia, the wonderful chemistry between Scully and Mulder, the polite empathetic way everyone conducts themselves instead of being a cynical butthole... Scully and Mulder are also just so charismatic and likable.

I'm amazed and inspired that people got together and made this from scratch.

I asked the same question a few months ago and one anon said something like this:
    >fans of the show will try to say the show is good because of the MOTW episodes, these episodes are good but still filler. They all loved the show because of the over-arch episodes and when they discovered it was going nowhere, they started to love the MOTW episodes and shit on the main arch
I watched the first two seasons and I don't regret it, but I really wish the show had a better main arch because I really loved the whole alien thing.

It's the season that made me stop watching. I was watching every episode until then as even the worst episode was still watchable thanks to Scully/Mulder but without them together the show is just miserable. I skipped to an episode with a 8/10 rating and when I had a hard time sitting through that I knew it was time to stop watching. Roadrunners was the only episode I enjoyed.

She becomes more and more open to the paranormal as the series goes on, eventually openly accepting a lot of it. There's literally a big arc where she's the one pushing for "the truth" while Mulder loses his faith. Not to mention throughout the show she's aware that the only reason she's on the X-Files is to try to rein in Mulder and keep him grounded, and she takes her job seriously and also cares about him so she also tries to balance his crazy theories with her own rationalism for his own sake and safety.
