makes you feel like you're the only nerd guy in a group of brawny drunks after the party's gone on for too long.

for some reason the only other movie that this reminds me of is The Lighthouse despite them being very different movies. the isolation of nothing around you except forced relationships and the only activity is to drink until you go utterly mad.

This one's one of my favorites. hope you like it!

I like how the americans consider this to be a brutal psychological horror, but we consider it a slightly dramatised slice of daily life

At least at that time, Australia was simultaneously extreme gay and violent toward homosexuals.

Should that part really matter to the guy? Like yeah you have to kill a kangaroo but these are some murderous insane people. Like killing a kangaroo cant matter to this dude when he should clearly understand his life is on the line. Right? Am I missing something?

Kangaroos are overpopulated in Australia, it's legal to obtain a license to cull them. There's no ethical issue unless you're a vegan.

yeah but let me be a gay for a second. Is the scene kind of portraying him killing the last decent part of himself. The rest of the movie is him kind of climbing out of it only to end up back where he started. Like is it symbolic of him killing off the part of him that isnt part of the Yaba or whatever the frick

The movie is about belonging and alienation. In Australia our culture was seen as masculine and lowbrow, which alienated the Canadian director Ted Kotcheff. So yes, the killing of the kangaroo has a sort of ritualistic purpose of bringing him into the fold of a parochial colonial society.
