The goal wasn't to get fired though. If they were fired, the severance process would be undone and the innies would simply cease to exist. They wanted to get out and be treated as real people, not die. Plus Lumon would just replace them with somebody else and they wanted to expose the working conditions there.
It's never explicitly stated in the show, but it seems obvious that there's a selection process when it comes to being severed, with people whose personality isn't suitable being filtered out. Mark is meek and doesn't make waves. Irving's a kindly old man with respect for authority. Dylan is goal-oriented and focused on the work. Helly bypasses that process and she fricks everything up as a result. She has an iron will and a forceful personality because she's a rich c**t used to getting everything she wants on the outside.

Severed Innies aren't completely psychologically apart from their Outies - initially they are often unwilling to do anything they're told, but eventually their resistance is chipped away by their Outie's insistence in clocking back in daily. Innies feel like they are individual humans which exist in a vacuum, but I'm pretty sure the procedure doesn't really go that deep: subconsciously they act out a lot of their original personalities and desires.

This is one of the shows with constant plot twists so they may yet turn this around but right now the entire operation looks like it's being run by a bunch of braindead morons.
Are they still doing a second season for this? I liked the first season but I really don't see how they can write a follow-up story for this the way they wrapped it up
Yes. It had nearly finished filming, but then the writers strike hit and they had to SHUT IT DOWN. So they still have to finish filming it and then all the post-production work, meaning it'll probably be quite a while until it actually arrives.
