I've never played a Silent Hill game but if you don't respect the source material them don't adapt it. That goes for books, games, old media, everything really.

source material is for ignoring but was also completely respected, problem is that they fricked up the last act not that they diverged from the game plot.

nta but they're one and the same. The last act is fricked up because that's when they totally start diverging from the video game's plot.

I'm not a fanboy or anything btw, the first Silent Hill game has some big issues plot wise (not helped by the terrible, terrible english voice acting) and it did probably need a bit of work to actually make sense on the big screen but instead they went in the opposite direction about halfway-two thirds of the way through the movie and just started making their own shit up that made no sense and was a lot shittier.

its fricked up because it ceased to be a movie at all, not because of the content of the movie

The initial decision to change the main character from a man to a woman is when you should have known to stay away. It's like they thought that audiences wouldn't buy a dad looking for his lost kid and thought it had to be a mom, completely moronic decision.

The director just wanted to grope the actresses & was afraid to work with men.

It's not even that for me, like whatever they gender-swapped it. It was long before "current year" nonsense so whatever. My problem is that they made the character of Rose a moron. I mean, genuinely she shouldn't be allowed custody of a child.

In the game you get a simple cutscene, no dialogue: guy (Harry) driving somewhere (we later find out it's to go to Silent Hill) with his daughter (Cheryl) at night. Lady cop on motorcycle passes them, they exchange a look briefly. A little while later his daughter stirs and wakes up for a bit when he notices the cop's bike lying on the shoulder of the highway. As he turns his head back there's suddenly a shadowy figure in the middle of the road, he swerves to avoid her, Cheryl screams, the camera spins and... black. Then Harry wakes up in his crashed jeep, he notices Cheryl's missing, panicing he gets out of the car and is surrounded on all sides by a thick layer of fog. And then the game begins.

Perfect. Didn't even need any dialogue to convey all that.

In the movie Rose's daughter Sharon goes sleepwalking and nearly jumps off a cliff while yelling "Silent Hill! Silent Hill!" in her sleep. So Rose looks up the town, finds out it's abandoned and the air is toxic when exposed for long periods. So she decides to take Sharon there without consulting her husband first, who reams her when he finds out because it's fricking stupid. And then, FOR NO FRICKING REASON, deliberately gets into a car chase with a female motorcycle cop (WHO'S WEARING SUNGLASSES AT NIGHT - HOW THE FRICK IS SHE EVEN ABLE TO SEE ANYTHING?!) resulting in her smashing through a chain-link fence at which point a shadowy figure appears in the road. She swerves, Sharon screams and... black. And when Rose comes to in her crashed jeep she finds Sharon's gone and the town's covered in a thick fog.

Stupid, fricking stupid. b***h, do you have BPD or something? What the frick's wrong with you?

I laughed as soon as that scene came up, wonder who the idiot responsible for that high school tier shit was and how he sleeps at night knowing he's a hack.

Well if your daughter has a sleepwalking problem and you live on a cliff-face the obvious thing to do is to leave all your doors unlocked at night.

That's literally what they thought. The director stated that he couldn't imagine a man going through Silent Hill for the sake of his child.

Nasty male feminist vibes. Director wanted to do away with all the male roles in the story, but what he wanted to do with these new female roles is revel in the female form being ruined.

Up until the main character goes into the hospital room with the burned girl and the lore dump starts, the movie is legit kino. It tanks hard after that moment though.

That said, that moment happens like 85% of the way through the movie, so you could go as far as just turning it off there and still get a great movie, and arguably one of if not the best vidya movies

Not sure which silent hill I saw, I might have seen both but I can’t remember.

I do remember that I they’re both considered good-enough movies to show people who don’t know the game. They have solid visuals, pacing, and writing, even if it’s not perfect.

Also it isn’t a crazy departure from the source material, but only ‘literally’, it covers the same big beats as the games and references the “scary stuff” and the ‘cool shit’, but misses the alien conversations, and the oppressive and isolated atmosphere which is what made it compelling for gamers.

That is what most people who play the games mean when they say it doesn’t respect the source material. There’s also a neglect of silent hill being a place which manifests of personal baggage whilst also being an actual place with other people in, which adds a lot of the story. Pyramid head isn’t “The Silent Hill” monster its Harrys Monster.

At the end of the day though the movie made the right call by being a blockbuster insofar as it brought silent hill into the public consciousness, which it’s good because you can chat to people about the games and not come across as a “gamer boi” to the non-gamers. But it’s not a satisfying silent hill movie for fans of the game.

Hate to be a pedant but it was James's monster, not Harry's, since James was the star of 2

Bruh downpour was excellent, it’s a complete meme that people think it’s bad. It contains all the right stuff for it to be a “true” silent hill, with marginally better gameplay.

Lore aside, my problem with the movie is that it just doesn't have that spooky lonely vibe that the games have, despite some cool visuals. Radha Mitchell's character is never alone for very long, and even when she is, the movie turns her encounters with various monsters into typical loud horror movie scenes. The games are well known for their atmosphere, whereas the movie has almost none.
