HOW THE FRICK IS THIS MOVIE RATED SO HIGHLY?? - not because it's a "bad" movie, but because it's a mediocre one. "Shawshank" is like a sewage pump for every idiotic Prison Movie cliché ever made:

It's not the best movie of all time but it is "solid" and there is nothing objectively bad about it, everything (story, cinematography, cast, music, etc.) just comes together and works. The Green Mile is the same.

The twist makes it overrated
For me, it's the main character talking about deserving to get cheated on by his roastie wife because he didn't pay enough attention to her. If the genders were reversed, normies would be up in arms about misogyny.
Yeah, the film essentially told men that they deserved to get cucked if they left for an extended business trip, had a health issue or weren't always at the top of their game.
Decades ago when the imdb boards were still a thing a bunch of trolls created dozens of alts (it was easy to do back then) and got it to #1.
Not sure why they chose that movie. Anyway those votes were never removed so it's just stuck there with an inflated score. If you check wayback it's been like that since 2005.

What really makes me sad is that it isn't possible to make this movie anymore. The idea that you can just escape from prison and go to some random costal town and live out the rest of your life without getting caught is something that you can't even imagine in the modern world of big brother watching everything and everyone being tracked a hundred different ways.
Great movie btw, sure it's not perfect but no movie is. Tons of great actors doing a great job and it touched a lot of emotional beats. It's not my favorite but I could easily put it in my top ten.

You would think that, but there are still thousands of missing people unaccounted for.
Sure random joggers who never had a drivers license to begin with. But he was kind of a high profile case, well educated and known by a lot of people. His escape would certainly have put his face in the papers. Unless that town he went to was some 20 person city in the middle of nowhere I find it hard to believe that someone wouldn't have noticed who he was at some point.
