Just watched the first episode of Blue Eye Samurai

>main character is half white half Japanese blue eyed woman who is a better samurai than all the men
>she was conceived by an evil white man who raped a Japanese woman. Everyone hates her for being a half breed and calls her a monster, round eye dog etc
>her mission is to kill the only four white guys in Japan who somehow are super powerful even though Japan is totally isolationist and killed all non Japanese who washed ashore in this period

Does this get better as it goes on or carry on in this format? Not sure why they needed to have white guys to be the main villains but set in a time period where none were allowed in Japan.

Also don’t really care to watch it if they continue this casual anti white racism without countering it. The main character is completely ashamed of being part white. Just seems like they’re happy to do it because nobody will mind.

    >main character is half white half Japanese blue eyed woman who is a better samurai than all the men
this is explained in the show

    >she was conceived by an evil white man who raped a Japanese woman. Everyone hates her for being a half breed and calls her a monster, round eye dog etc
this one is a fairly understandable reason to hate people

    >her mission is to kill the only four white guys in Japan who somehow are super powerful even though Japan is totally isolationist and killed all non Japanese who washed ashore in this period
there are only 4 white men in japan because all the others were killed
japans isolationism is the reason its so easy to narrow down the list of targets

I mean, one of my aunts was a half white orphan in Vietnam. She was beaten by the other kids and they shattered her teeth. She lives in America now because her husband took her out of that place, but yea, not every place likes white people if you consider the event going on in the area at the time.

            Anonymous

Exactly. The director failed so comprehensively the actors in the film didn’t understand what he was trying to get across. Which is not particularly surprising when he didn’t even read the book

            >makes advanced society with no racism or sexism or prejudice
            >OH NO YOU HAVE TO DO FEDERAL SERVICE TO VOTE ITS A NIGHTMARE
            >oh his parents didn’t do it, and are rich and happy and can do whatever they enjoy

Hence why all the starship troopers “fans” desperately trying to make the satire work have to white literally invent things not in the movie for it to make more sense

            >uhhh no bro, the meteor was a false flag, the bugs didn’t do it
            >even though we see the bugs are capable of launching projectiles into space with accuracy, wormholes exist, and they are capable of colonising other worlds. There’s no way they could possibly launch a rock at earth

The last refuge of the Verhoeven wiener sucker starship troopers “fan” is ignoring all in movie events and screaming about “satire”.

Ah yes, perfectly shows how awful the “fascist” government was with its nuanced writing, how many fascist governments publicly broadcast their own governments failures and then have their military leader peacefully resign again?

Verhoeven simply fricked it up. He let his own personal connection from childhood taint his idea of what fascism is (which is incredibly vague based on all his interviews) and thought having Doogie Houser in an SS uniform would be some lynchpin lmao

She’s a flawed antihero you nonce. Her actions are rarely, if ever, depicted as positive and most of the “good” characters do not agree with her despite sometimes temporarily allying with her. It’s likely that her big arc will be coming to terms with the error of her ways.

      Fricking this.

How are chuds not understanding this is a subtle takedown of white supremacist colonial ideology and toxic masculinity that ruined the world. She only hates whiteness in character, it’s not a statement of creator intent. There’s no need to counter it. She is fighting the oppressors.

The show does twist the "white colonizer" trope by having Abijah Fowler be entirely motivated by power rather than a genuine belief that white people are superior over the Japanese, he's actually ambivalent about their differences and there's even a scene that subverts the religious zealotism associated with his archetype where he just cynically bargains with a statue of Jesus rather because he admits that praying would be more of an insult coming from him.

How is this a twist on it? White colonisers being capitalist motivated in order to exploit the wealth and labour of the non whites they colonise has been the driving narrative of history since WW2 and earlier.

Yes. Fowler actually overtly comments on that so you don’t even need to read subtext. They closed it off to all the westerners, but were greedy so they left a crack for a few westerners to do trade so the shogunate could profit. Fowler explicitly states that he exploited this crack and that their entire empire was going to fall because of their greed.

            >I thought they were gonna reveal she was lied to about the white guys backgrounds and it turns out they weren’t moustache failing villains who did nothing but buy and sell slaves (no need to have a vengeance quest on the thriving internet Al Japanese slave trade thoughts I guess)
I'm holding out that the twist is going to be that Mizu's white heritage comes from her mother and the other four white men are red herrings. There's no point otherwise to reveal that the "mom" who raised Mizu in her childhood was just a servant at the end.

Loooooool. Don’t hold your breath bro. I enjoyed the show just because the action was fun, the animation was great and the interactions were comfy but the messaging felt clumsy as hell

Maybe they could only succeed getting a Netflix pitch they put race and critiquing whites at the front and center (just the gender dynamics alone seem interesting enough to me with her being Mulan on crack but I guess that would mean critiquing Japanese culture and is not good enough, more oppression points needed for that Netflix money)

You’re focusing on the connotations of language, not the meaning. The same could be said about “purity”. Pure is often used as a connotation for quality with the assumption that more pure = better, but that is not always true. 100% pure alcohol vaporizes almost instantly which is bad if you want to drink it. Pure breed dogs often have health problems due to lack of genetic diversity, and breathing pure oxygen can kill you. If we assume pure = good, then one might make false blanket assumptions regarding the quality of the aforementioned examples.

They didn't. 2 of them fricked off back to Europe, 1 died offscreen, presumably not having much power considering no one gives a shit he's dead to the point Fowler only finds out he's dead when Mizu tells him. That leaves Fowler, who was stuck in a fortress for years with only a small staff under his command to guard him and get groceries, who likely answer to Shindo above him anyway. He only has real power once the guns show up, which he promptly loses.

Because it was unofficial and deliberately swept under the rug, Abijah wasn't acting on the behalf of a nation. He was just an opportunist who made a secret deal with the Shogunite so they could benefit from one another. My guess is the four white guys were criminals looking to enterprise, which is why they had so many connections back at England despite never saying or acting like they were doing it for the empire.

that's the thing that doesn't make sense tho, the Shogunate specifically closed the country to avoid any type of foreign influence, so that the shogun could consolidate power without outside religions, trade and other shit fricking his reign, the dutch at Dejima were the only foreign traders allowed and even then they were extremely restricted

It was under the books, it's not like Catholicism suddenly popped up in Japan. The Shogunite's increasing wealth was credited to himself, the part about him secretly profiting off Abijah's activities was obviously not something everyone knew or were supposed to. And that was the point, to make it seem like Japan was faring better from the isolation.

    >look at a recent japanese manga, it has nothing to do with race
It's not like BES actually properly explored the race stuff so it feels weird that it's there. Maybe the next season should explain it or something? Also the last 2 episodes felt a scene from a video game considering how contrived and asspullish the action was.

The frick are you talking about? One of the conflicts in the latest arc of JJK was the inherent supernatural energy exclusive in Japanese people, incentivizing other world governments to besiege the country to start capturing sorcerers for experimentation and as a potential energy source battery.

No, but Dragon Ball was neither set in Japan nor did it try to show cultural and historical issues of Japan while completely making other shit involved with those issues up to fit a modern agenda

You're stretching to feel offended and victimized, the show emphasizes the racism and xenophobia of Japan since that is literally one of the core themes of the story. Every major character is an outcast in some form or another, Mizu just takes the brunt of it because of her distinctive features.

But obviously there will be anachronisms since the show isn't meant to be a super realistic historical retelling of Japan. It's ultimately an action show where samurai can fight each other while jumping off cliffs and the main villain chops an entire table in half with a katana. It's like ASOIAF/GOT, it takes certain elements from medieval europe and is "realistic" in the sense that it's grounded and there's lots of violence and sex but that doesn't make it a documentary.

its no less realistic than kurosawa movies, which are set in japan explicitly as well, but also take huge artistic liberty with both history and physics

I'm sure one of the white men back at London are going to turn out to be nice or atoning for their past but I'm also sure there's going to be a double twist that Mizu's white parent isn't any of them and it's actually her mom.

        Anonymous

        >yfw her whiteness comes from her mother and her father is japanese

THAT is the final twist. Her mother is white, not her father. Very likely a rich woman, ensuring our protagonist doesn't die in poverty by show's end.

          >yfw her whiteness comes from her mother and her father is japanese

This would be a moronic twist because why wouldn’t she know this? It also makes no thematic difference unless the Japanese guy raped her, and is even more ludicrous because why the frick is a white woman travelling to Japan at all in this era and scenario?

            >and is even more ludicrous because why the frick is a white woman travelling to Japan at all in this era and scenario?

Yeah, I guess it’s not like they can get any more ridiculous. Is there really nothing in season 1 showing her mother as being Japanese or being directly referred to as such though? The kids bullying her seemed pretty open about knowing she was the product of a prostitute jap woman and some white foreigner

If it was the other way around surely people would know

Unless the whole thing was covered up because it's a HUGE scandal.

And yes, that means she'll have a LOT of people trying to kill her to keep that secret. Like serious, deceptively calm assassins.

                > Is there really nothing in season 1 showing her mother as being Japanese or being directly referred to as such though? The kids bullying her seemed pretty open about knowing she was the product of a prostitute jap woman and some white foreigner
The twist at the end reveals that the japanese woman who raised Mizu as her daughter was just a maid who happened to be given the responsibility by her rescuer. There's no point to that reveal if it isn't going to turn out that her real mom isn't notable or significant in some way and Abijah implies there was a lot more going on in the past behind the scenes.

As for the thematic purpose? Probably will lead to Mizu accepting her white heritage, she currently views it as a curse because of how she was raised in Japan and every white person she's met so far are horrible human beings so if turns out to be like her mom and she's actually kind or a victim then that could change how she views herself.

                Anonymous

Her mom is a British royal. The entire monarchy is trying to shut this scandal down. By blood, Mizu is tied to the British monarchy.

That's completely unacceptable to the British government, and they'd like nothing better than to bury Mizu.

It's also why they deliberately tried to spread the rumor Mizu's father was white, attempting to hide the scandal.

                Anonymous

Pretty sure this would be a good excuse to try and put a British person on the Japanese throne or get them in the nobility to open up trade without needing to go full commodore Perry.

                Anonymous

Mizu finds herself in the middle of political machinations. Some British are trying to ensure Mizu's secret DOES come out for that reason, while others are trying to kill her.

The royal in question is just trying to keep Mizu alive, but her lack of experience and influence handicaps how much help she can send her.

                Anonymous

Put simply, it's a nice way to keep the story going for a number of seasons. Mizu doesn't want any of this shit, all these assassins are just in her way.

What she wants is the truth, no matter who tries to keep it from her. And of course a whole new can of worms opens up when she finds out her mother is ROYALTY.

What’s the deal with the guy with no fingers/stub hands? Seems like a congenital deformity

In Japan, they killed babies like that by just leaving them in the woods to die up to and even after the Meiji reformation

Is this just a pro disability character to look woke or is there some purpose here? It’s hard to get around how dumb the idea

    >damn… we are both outcasts too!

Could have used a more realistic or relatable one like the Burakumin. This dude somehow worked and ate enough to become a giant when he has no functional hands. And has a bag of specialised tools to use with his stub arms somehow in a world where even buying a decent knife was expensive. Metal is very valuable in general in Japan remember, let alone small artisan pieces.

Even post WW2 you can find stories of people rushing into the sites of burned down houses to try and search for nails from their wooden houses because iron was so valuable

I don't think that was official policy, Ringo was stuck working a dead end serving job in a backwater tavern which is an occupation that would track for someone crippled like him

Ringo was born without hands, but from what we’ve seen and heard it kinda seems like his dad was an abusive dickbag who liked having somebody to kick around. We also don’t see any other sons or even a wife helping out at the noodle shop, so he probably took what he could get. He DID canonically abandon Ringo in the woods when he was seven, but a group of wild tanuki saved him and then he just walked back home.

Also I don’t recall much about Ringo’s toolkit, but it seemed like the most specialized thing was just a funny belt for his wrist. He has regular knives, chopsticks, and a sewing needle.

they were all relegated to the artificial island of dejima, so all traders wouldnt technically be on japanese soil and more importantly would limit contact with outsiders

      >All I want from season two are some samurai vs knight duel
knights had long since lost their military role by the 1600s
the english had instituted the new model army by then, so a standing army composed of professionals rather than knights and levies who fought on a complex system of obligations

so the closest equivalent to a samurai by then would be a gentleman officer who is equally skilled at utilizing his sabre as he is at strategy and table manners

    Can you endure the following:
    >The main character having huge plot armor and being able to heal any wound?
    >No criticism of Japan's problems or how deeply flawed Mizu's revenge is?
