That was Joel Schumacher inserting his degenerate fetishes into the movie and fooling some stuffed suit at Warner Brothers that it was just "homage to the 60s show". He offered to work for less than Burton was asking for a third movie, and that's really all it took for WB to greenlight it. It's weird; Joel isn't a bad director, but holy frick were his 2 Batmans awful.
It has a garbage, shallow and incoherent script, and the acting is hammed in. But the visuals are pretty! 😀
Burton is one of those directors that's S-tier for visuals and theming, but needs a tard-wrangler to actually make a coherent script out of it. He had that with the first one, but Returns was crap.
