So a clone, you can count hairs and say "she is Gwen's mental template on the body of a shapeless shapeshifter" but it's a clone and was introduced as the new Gwen in the clone saga: clone.
Between this and Doc Ock suddenly being Magneto 2.0 because Bendis wrote himself into a corner, Ultimate Clone Saga was kinda moronic.
That was an amusing twist that you could only get away with in an AU.

To whatever extent Bendis ever plans things, this wasn't something that had been in the works for long. When the Amazing Spider-Man movie was announced, "who will be cast as the new Spider-Man?" blew up on social media, there was a campaign for it to be Donald Glover, and got a lot of attention and inspired Bendis to kill Peter and replace him with Miles, which became such a big publicity stunt for Marvel that it shaped the entire direction of Alonso's time as EiC.
Who THE FRICK had the idea of casting that talentless homosexual as Spider-Man in first place? Everyone wanted Tobey on the ride again, Drake Bell whom came to voice him later, or the Kid from Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Donald Glover was pretty much going to his 30's at that time.
