Half of the audience want le Donnie Darko 2 and the other half were popcorn eaters. Richard Kelly was channeling Philip K. Dick, but mass audiences aren't literate enough to realize it or appreciate it.

I liked Donnie Darko but have never seen this. Curious that Richard Kelly never made another original movie after this.

To be fair, the studio lost $17M on this movie. Pretty sure that's the kind of frick up that makes them not give you another chance.

Watched it for the first time a few hours ago and i'm still speechless, some once in a lifetime type stuff. Some of the most unhinged schizo shit i've ever seen somehow realized as a big Hollywood movie, I'm honestly baffled a studio agreed to produce this but i'm so glad they did. I need to get that bluray asap.

      >Kelly sent the organizers of the 2006 Cannes Film Festival a rough cut of Southland Tales on DVD assuming that it would not be accepted.[22] Much to his surprise, they loved it and wanted the film entered in competition for the Palme d'Or. He stopped editing the film and was also unable to complete all of the visual effects in time for the screening.[22] Kelly's film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2006 with a length of 160 minutes.[23] Kelly describes the negative reaction at Cannes as a "very painful experience on a lot of levels" but ultimately felt that the film "was better off because of it".[22] After the film's festival release, Southland Tales was purchased by Sony Pictures (via their label Destination Films) and Samuel Goldwyn Films, originally Sony Pictures Classics, Screen Gems and TriStar Pictures were up for US distribution rights.
      >Kelly edited the film down to the basic storylines of the characters portrayed by Scott, Gellar, and Johnson. The director also sought to keep the musical number performed by Timberlake, based on "All These Things That I've Done" by The Killers which he felt was the heart and soul of the film.[15] Editorial changes were made to restructure the order of the film's scenes, including re-recording all of Timberlake's voice-over. The director also added 90 new visual effects shots to the film and removed 20 to 25 minutes of footage from his initial cut.
I guess this is why Kelly never got to make another movie? How do you frick up a release this bad?

Except he did, The Box, and its just as big a sleeper as ST.
Kelly really doesn't have an audience, not even reddit. I think he appeals more to the print scifi mind.
His kinos are for people who can tolerate a little enigma, also metaphysical forces beyond our understanding. Upstream Color is good in that regard as well. Shane and Kelly are in a class of their own.

Read the leaked script for Carruth's "A Topiary."

Easy, just steal a dead guy's story that wasn't completely fleshed out.

Fine, you explain why you messed up your own directors cut and ST was a giant mess.

This isn't a debate. You have the brain of a woman and should feel shame.

Ooh, now that is some saucy intrigue. Is he claiming that Kelly stole Donnie Darko, ST or both?

Both, but ST wasn't finished and Kelly didn't understand it but had to run with it when Darko put him on the map.

There's also a huge Jane's Addiction "3 Days" theme running through the movie. Some of the dialogue is taken directly from the lyrics and there's a whole sequence synced with the live version.

Southland Tales is awful and Kelly comes across pretty dumb in interviews. I can believe he stole Donnie Darko. If he didn't steal it he just got very lucky one time.
