Even William Shatner delivered one of his best performances ever on that show. He could get away with being a ham on Star Trek but not Colombo
They'll probably frick it up by making his wife a regular character, doing overarching seasonal arcs, and showing flashbacks of Columbo's new tragic backstory.
I can't say, I haven't seen Baretta, but Columbo is one of those rare pieces of media that I feel comfortable recommending almost universally. The writing is intelligent without being up its own ass and you are rewarded somewhat for paying attention and thinking as you watch. It's also just simply entertaining.
Truly one of the tv shows of all time.
