I finally watched it recently and it’s fricking horrible. They take the single “joke” of “pretend like this dead guy isn’t actually dead” and stretch it out to an entire 90-minute movie.
You’ve essentially already seen the film by just knowing the premise.
People are 'nostalgic' for cheap affordable cars and homes. But instead they will be imprisoned in their 'walkable city' zo mne and live in a pod when not wage slaving.
why does mid 80s to mid 90s asian cinema have such a vibe to them? They all have that keyboard synth soundtrack and all that, but besides that, they all have this dreamy, nostalgic thing going.
This aesthetic always makes me feel really bad. Like nostalgia but I've never lived it. Just before the internet took over everything and instead I have to live in the overwhelming age of social media.
Closest match would be The Killer (The John Woo one), Sonatine is also really close. Basically any Woo or Kitano movie will fit the bill but those two in particular stand out for being the purest in that 90s jap aesthetic.
Some weird synchronicity shit happened and I clicked on this youtube video an hour before seeing this thread, it's not kino but I'll include it anyway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kor7Kp9AIs

It feels like some SNL sketch that someone thought would be a great movie.
I guess boomers were easy to entertain.
I liked watching Weekend at Bernie's when I was a kid because of that one scene with the blonde girl in the bikini. I believe it was colored blue.
Initial D

To Live & Die in LA
BASADO.
Best thing about that movie is how wienery and reckless the protag gets towards the end. Actually pretty disturbing.
Black Rain
Honest answer? Basically any Japanese cinema from the 80s and 90s.
*also 2000's stuff shot on film (it's easy to tell)
It's not as bright and sunshiney but it's mid 90s Japanese aesthetic and very kino:
Cure (1997)
dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa
I somewhat agree but it's too horror-y. If you're going that route Ringu is also a good bet, I actually find that movie comfy.
You're right and same, Cure is really comfy for me
90s Takeshi Kitano and Takashi Miike movies (though I believe the pic is from the 80s)
