A lot of kids grew up with the prequels like the parents did with the originals. By the way, my kids are in their 20s now and never went to see the rise of sky walker either. So yeah. I think the difference is the degree of actual loathing people of two generations have for Disney now. Hollywood media pressured him in to selling by smearing the shit out of the prequels. Hollywood feared the prequels because they were independent movies made entirely outside of the Hollywood system and they made millions of dollars. If the prequels were allowed to succeed, more filmmakers would have worked to follow George Lucas's footsteps instead of remaining in the Hollywood system. Also Lucas only sold Star Wars because he was under the impression that Disney would produce his story treatments of 7,8,9 due to a handshake agreement he had with Bob Iger. He put Kathleen Kennedy in charge of Lucasfilm because he trusted her to stay loyal to him and make sure his scripts got produced. Lucas didn't think KK would stab him in the back and go in to business for herself.

TLJ had a near identical opening to TFA and was on track for 1.9-2 billion during it's opening weekend.
All she had to do was the easiest layup in history by bringing back Luke and having him go on a fun adventure with Rey instead of rehashing ESB but with a character it didn't fit, and Star Wars could've survived anything. Even if the third movie was absolute shit, it still would've at least made it to Age of Ultron numbers just by virtue of people needing to see the 3rd movie just to feel like they finished it, instead of the 2nd movie tanking any care people had for it.

People were certainly shitting on the prequel trilogy but they were still affectionate towards it and Star Wars as a whole. And for all its faults, the prequel trilogy was always considered to have interesting ideas going for it, even if they ended up executed poorly. By no means was Star Wars dead in the water at that point, or else Disney wouldn't have paid billions of dollars to acquire it and then sunk yet more money into crafting those horrible abominations known as the sequel trilogy plus spin-offs.

As a matter of taste this is correct. In terms of public interest there was still plenty of goodwill toward Star Wars in the lead up to TFA. Not as much as there had been prior to TPM, but TFA was still a big hit. People want to like Star Wars. Just look at how Mandalorian took off like a rocket at the same time The Rise of Skywalker was getting eviscerated. Star Wars should have died 40 years ago but it's remarkably resilient.
RotS is good but other than that I agree. I personally like Phantom Menace, but only because of its spectacle and action. (podracing, lightsaber battles, etc.) The movie itself isn't that great, the acting is stiff and the dialogue is hokey. AotC and Indy 4 are fricking awful pieces of garbage.

This is a really important fact that most people overlook. Disney spent almost $500 million shooting Rise of Skywalker, and then another $200 million on marketing….meaning that movie likely lost money or (at very best) broke even. But Rise of Skywalker was also a disaster on merchandising, easily making the least of all 9 Skywalker films on merch, and likely losing money there as well
Episode 9 was a much bigger disaster than Solo
The merchandising was so bad that Hasbro almost went bankrupt and you can still find the toys in clearance aisles years later. Apparently the star wars people really hyped up the knights of ren and got them a bunch of lego sets and action figures, then they weren't in the movie for more like 10 seconds
