Kryptonians get super powers from being exposed to solar radiation.

Kryptonians get super powers from being exposed to solar radiation.
So why does a certain subset of Kryptonians has a genetic mutation that attempts to block solar radiation?

You could infer it as symbolic of their abuse of power. Superman and his family don't wallow in sunlight, they don't try and gain as much access to their godhood as possible. But the Zods would overexpose themselves, for generation after generation.

You could also take it as an explanation as to why Superman is pound for pound the strongest living Kryptonian, his body puts up the least resistance to getting powers. Whereas the Zod melanin might be as tough as the rest of their skin: Their powers are literally working against recharging adequately.

Gaining godhood from sunlight not produced by your sun (let alone the red and yellow light are almost the exact same) isn't an evolutionary possibility, so maybe it's an active demonstration of the "need for yellow sunlight" being psychosomatic, and maybe the powerful Kryptonians are some kid of biological construct, that this is programming for.
A pretty compelling idea truth be told, super soldiers that you build a "can't use their weapons on our home planet" clause into.

Humans get skin cancer from being exposed to solar radiation.
So why does a certain subset of humans has a genetic mutation that attempts to maximize solar radiation exposure?

      I'm sorry anon

Because they historically lived away from the equator in areas that have shorter periods of sunlight during half of the year and needed to maximize solar absorption for vitamin D production.

Did you really think there wasn't an explanation for it?

And kryptonians lived on a planet that had a sun that didn't give them super powers. There was literally zero evolutionary bias towards any kind of skin colour

Were kryptonians already evolved to the state they're in by modern times back when their sun wasn't red?

        >a bunch of nonsense
White people didn't pop up until long, long after humans settled in Europe, and other high-latitude peoples have significantly darker skin.

        >Humans get skin cancer from being exposed to solar radiation.

No, we don't. I tan every summer and I'm fine. My grandpa spent his whole life working in the sun as a farmer and a tractor driver and he never used an sun screen. Same with my grandma.

It's almost like anecdotes are not evidence.

People have been told that sun exposure will give you cancer for decades now. It’s only recently that we are seeing some genuine pushback against that research.

Only yellow sun. Red sun radiation does nothing for them.

I never understood why kryptonians were powerless on their home planet. Red sun my ass! The only difference between a red sun and a yellow sun is temperature. Do kryptonians need a certain minimum temperate from their sun to gain powers? If so then why does a red sun drain kryptonians powers? Wouldn't a blue sun make them even stronger than the earth's yellow sun?

If we assume that kryptonians need sunlight exposure on their skin to gain their powers. And melanin has a sunlight reduction effect of anywhere between 50-100%. Then melanin would make krpytonian powers nearly impossible to manifest in more melanated individuals. By all logic presented their can not be any dark skinned kryptonians who are on the same level as light skinned kryptonians. At best they would be half as strong. In fact the least melanated individuals. Those with the lightest skin, hair and eye colors would be some of the strongest.

But superman still flies. He doesnt just jump and fall with style. He hovers and levitates.

Their cells can only process a specific wavelength of light produced by Yellow Suns. Red Suns produce a destructive interference wavelength which cancels out their powers. Blue Suns unlock God Mode.
And yes, all of this is bullshit science. Don't get too hung up on it. It just works in their universe.

Well what about brown dwarves and neutron stars? What do they do to kryptonians?

    >a genetic mutation that attempts to block solar radiation
Absorb. Pigments absorb wavelengths of light, like how plants absorb violet, orange, blue and yellow light, making it appear green, "block" is an imperfect conceptualization of what's happening. The light that special pigments absorb is what is used by the organism. What you should be asking is unless Kryptonians are only absorbing UV light, which is invisible to the naked eye, why do any appear pale? That means they're reflecting much of that light back to your eyes.

Humans distribute their oxygen using red blood cells. So why does a certain subset of humans has a genetic mutation that produces red blood cells that do not bind oxygen?
