KFP will never recover from the pants-on-head moronic idea to let China "help" write KFP3. They wrote themselves into a corner. Once your martial artist can fly with chi-Superman shit, you can't go back to the fun Jackie Chan stuff, so you may as well settle for straight-to-streaming kids' shows

Damn shame, the first two movies were good shit.

KFP2 isn't shit, but it did contribute to the problem that KFP3 solidified, if we're honest. Less Furious Five impact, Po masters himself (thus mastering Kung Fu), the notion of weapon progress is brought up which is its own can of worms...
But it's still decent. 1 is paced better but I like 2 more because, up until the third act, it feels like it's building into something good for 3. Then it does the "pandas are still around!" bullshit.

It's fairly mediocre. It's nice to have Jack Black on the role again and I'm glad it wasn't just episodic swill like LoA, but Po's character regresses still and it just lacks the energy and excitement that the premise should have.

      Anonymous

      >episodic swill
Nothing wrong with that, especially if those episodes help develop the setting and/or the characters in manners that would be normally considered too long for the regular movies. With that said, his show really would've benefited from being a special or even another movie.

    >long ago, in ancient China, the peawieners ruled over Gongmen City. They brought great joy and prosperity to the city for they had invented fireworks. But their son, Lord Shen, saw darker power in the fireworks. What had brought colour and joy could also bring darkness and destruction. Shen's troubled parents consulted a soothsayer. She foretold that if Shen continued down this dark path, he would be defeated by a warrior of black and white. The young lord set out to change his fate. But what he did next only sealed it. Shen returned to his parents full of pride. But in their faces, he saw only horror. He was banished from the city forever. But Shen swore revenge. Someday he would return and all of China would bow at his feet

    >my father's throne. He used to let me play here beside him, promising someday, this throne would be mine (throws it away from the window)

    >(soothsayer about his parents) they loved you. They loved you so much that having to send you away killed them

    >young Shen was in line to rule over Gongmen City, but he wanted more
literally all the information the film gives us about the peawiener or his family. Did they really think that was enough to make us give a shit about him?

between kung fu Panda 2 and Astro Boy film, i can't decide which one is the most incompetent "CG film for children trying to tell a serious/dark story with mature subject matters while also trying to be comedic". Both are shoddily constructed, badly paced and the humor doesn't mesh well with the serious elements (nor does it work on its own)

      Anonymous

gonna have to pick Panda 2 as the worst. Astro is incredibly bland, but he isn't annoying or idiotic like Po in Panda 2. Likewise, while the jokes aren't funny, they aren't quite as embarassingly unfunny like Panda 2' jokes. The pacing is also slightly better thanks to a longer runtime. So yeah, Panda 2 is the most incompetent film

    >i gotta go. I'm the Dragon Warrior. It's kind of my job to save kung fu. And if i don't... what am i?
    >you're my son (Po opens his mouth but says nothing) Right?
    >(Tigress off screen) Po, it's time
    >um... goodbye
i lose all sympathy for Po when he leaves to go on that dangerous mission without answering Ping's question. I don't care if he found out recently that Ping isn't his biological father as he thought. He is still his son. Ping raised him and loved him since he was a baby, so Po having doubts and not answering yes is very inmature from him

whose idiot had the idea to reveal all of the peawiener's backstory in the first 2 mins? Shouldn't they have saved that information for later? They don't even provide context. Who is the soothsayer telling the story to? The audience? Someone else?

      Anonymous

first movie did it right, waiting until halfway mark to reveal Tai Lung's backstory when Tigress tells it to Po. You watch the 1st half wondering what did Tai Lung do to be locked in that prison and what's his connection with Shifu, and then they answer it naturally at halfway mark. Works better than some character we don't know yet revealing his past in the first 2 mins

  15. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

the peawiener's backstory doesn't awake sympathy because there's never a scene showing him being innocent before becoming corrupted. 1 showed Tai Lung as a kid, but 2 doesn't do this. Every scene with peawiener shows him as an butthole

      Anonymous

Why is that necessary? Not every villain needs to be sympathetic. Sometimes it's just fun to watch an evil butthole do evil butthole things. Are you hoping that Disney announces a Jafar spinoff or some shit?

        Anonymous

then don't try to paint him as a tragic villain if he isn't going to have any sympathetic qualities or a flashback showing him being innocent

          Anonymous

He's sympathetic because he wants to change his destiny, but that's a big no no in the KFP universe.

          >Rio, Winnie the Pooh, Arthur Christmas, Tintin
seriously, frick the academy for nominating a sequel made on autopilot like Panda 2 instead of any of those films, which i assure you had more passion put into them during production

they also nominated the Puss in Boots film, so Dreamworks already scored a nomination. Why give them two instead of being fair to other studios? Tangled wasn't nominated the previous year (and HTTYD was), so Winnie the Pooh should've gotten one

All of the movies that got nominated that year didn't deserve it except for Rango.

The peawiener didn’t need one, his backstory was he wanted his father’s throne, saw a prophecy from goat women, killed all pandas out of pure fear which you can see throughout the film in his encounters with po, and then got outcasted because he overreacted.

The real question is how he would’ve turned out if goat women didn’t say anything for him to be afraid but he’s probably just a dicktator so it’s for the best.

that's irrelevant. Panda 2 needed a longer runtime than 81 mins in order for the story to work. It also needed a better script, but that's another matter

          Anonymous

I thought it was pretty good but still, if 2 mins gets left on the cutting room floor, who's really counting? Those 81 minutes got the story across. I'd call 3 a cash grab before 2.

            Anonymous

a lot got left in the cutting room : Shen being albino, his wolves' army being former royal guards of which Shen was the only member of peawiener family to befriend them and be nice to them (which is why they're loyal to him), the soothsayer being Shen's nanny as a kid, Shen's parents not paying much attention to him growing up, the backstories of those new masters (Crocodile, Ox and Rhyno), etc. These story elements were all scrapped in the final film. We'd be looking at a slightly better film if they left them in

If you look at it objectively the only difference Tai Lung and Shen have as characters is that Tai Lung had a connection to Shifu, a character that was well established in the first movie. If you take that away Tai Lung isn't sympathetic and imo is pretty boring. He's just an obstacle for Shifu and Po to overcome. Shen isn't as sympathetic as Tai Lung but he at least had a character.
