in time. It seems like Tracy only stopped working on the comic in 2020 when they started production on the pilot. Since then it seems like she's been pretty busy with crowdfunding and season 1 work, but she's mentioned she will be getting back into the comic once things are stabilized. As far as I know, I don't think she's actually running the show, just kind of overseeing things so she's probably pretty busy now, but I'd imagine once things are fully in motion, she'll have a smaller role to play.

In any event, the comic is like her life's work. I don't see her giving up on that.

I think a part of why it feels so natural is that it’s true to the setting. That sorta thing was actually kinda hip at the time, and treated in a much more casual way. The lavender scare hadn’t really kicked in.

              Anonymous

not necessarily that it was hip, but that practically every night life scene was illegal thus they had to coexist. you couldn't be calling the cops on a crossdresser if you were also at the club guzzling booze and gambling. when alcohol was legalized again, and these spaces became public, the still-underground queer clubs were once again divorced from mainstream night life.

Shit is so cryptic in Lackadaisy.

              >But it's not like Vivzieshit stuff or even TADC which broke like what, 200 million views?
I think it's kind of sad that we live in an age where if you can't break 200 million views it means your project is seen as at risk of failing. 12 million is great.

I agree, but unfortunately, alpha gen and zoomers may just roll their eyes at this show. I know it has far more artistic merit than say Vivzieshit but I'm just worried shitty views may destroy the project.
But maybe not, guess we'll see where it goes. It certainly deserves more love and attention but Tracey and her team may have to adjust the animated series to fit a slightly broader audience. Give shipping bait or more of an edge or just make the humor more snappy.
Making dry commentary about the 1920s probably isn't gonna cut it for the Youtube crowd.

It's less than 2 minutes of new material and it doesn't tell anyone familiar with Lackadaisy anything new

it's just kind of mid even if the art is good

You can see vast improvement in nearly all aspects of production. While the actual story in this one was just a one-off gag that’s kind of forgettable, I think it’s obvious what they’re doing. It seems like they’re testing workflows and otherwise tightening bolts while ramping up to the main production. The added benefit is having more releases to keep interest up instead of putting out nothing for the whole year. This is a model that other indie productions could probably benefit from.

In other words, the story doesn’t seem to really be the point here. It seems like upping the ante on the overall production quality and making the process more efficient is the focus for now.

        A wrap-up within 20 years?
If you have an idea for a serialised story, you gotta release at least 1 volume a year. That's the bare minimum. If the overly detailed art style is preventing you from "churning out" a single page in 3.65 days, well, you gotta simplify it, sweetie.

Bone author did 1350 pages over the course of 13 years. So, on average, 108 pages a year.

When she started with her webcomic there weren't good ways to monetize them. People made money from ads and selling merchandise back then (which was so much hassle it took time away from producing their comics) so Tracy updated at her own pace, for fun, not to support herself. Unlike manga in Japan there isn't a good market to serialize comics in the West which would naturally entail a certain commitment to producing a certain amount of work within a given timeframe. At this point Tracy has her Patreon and her fans are OK with her output.

Tracy's art style is also definitely part of the problem. It's very detailed and she does everything herself. If she had assistants she'd be faster but I don't think she'd want to give up control for the comic and I don't know if the art would be as good. Honestly I think the best chance we would have had to see the story finish out with Tracy's artwork was if she had repackaged the story as a series of Visual Novels. She could reuse elements more easily that way. Alternately perhaps its life could have started as a web novel with embedded illustrations.

For awhile yeah. Then she kind of left it be, barely updating due to having a game-dev job. Then she quit that after a few years. Launched a Patreon at the behest of her fans which was INSANELY profitable - she did a little splooge of updates for 1-2 years then stopped to do the animation-kickstarter out of nowhere.

Now it's been years and she still hasn't updated the comic, even though someone else is heading the animation production.. supposedly.

She’s talked about it in interviews. I think someone with animation experience is actually running production, but Tracy still oversees things like general artistic direction.

They’re really smart with the production schedule. Since the fundraiser, they’ve put out like 3(?) short things already. Considering how long animation takes (especially at this level) they must be absolutely cranking. Anyone have any idea when the next proper episode is coming out?

i've heard down the grapevine that comic stuff is still a priority, but the animation needs all hands on deck. tracy's mentioned in streams that she's eager to get back to it when she has the time.
of course this is vague and indeterminate, but i'm honestly thinking the animated series is going to be worth it.

if season one does well enough, and the team starts to dig their heels in and get the feel of it all, she can have time away from direction to continue her comic.

i love this comic and Im excited for the pilot but also lowkey worried about how it will be recieved.
Tracey has a certain esoteric sense of humor, it can be really high brow for normie audiences and kids.
Seeing that humor go from comic to animation isn't as punchy.
Not sure if it's pacing or what.

Her strongest suit is her art and the writing can be decent; but Tracey maybe plays it too safe. She's the opposite of Vivzie, never letting anything *too* dramatic happen to her characters, never pushing the boundaries of violence, sex appeal or really intriguing hooks. It's just kind of paint by numbers.

The bonus comics are interesting and funny, but that's carried heavily by her expressive art. But in this animation style due to Tracey's autism-levels of details is heavily dumbed down and it just doesn't have the same charm? I dunno.. I wish she'd take chances. Make it a darker noir kind of thing. One of my favorite plotlines was Mitzi x Zib x Wick and the weird dynamic there. Easily Tracey couldhave Mitzi fricking and conning them both, acting as the dubious (probably big bad) of the comic. But, it's only hinted at.
Rocky COULD be more unhinged and do more violent shit, but it's mostly cartoony. Even Mordecai doesn't really get to do as much dark stuff as an assassin maybe should?

I know the pilot came out, it got like 12 million which isn't bad. I know the backerkit made 2 million.
But it's not like Vivzieshit stuff or even TADC which broke like what, 200 million views?

          Anonymous

          >But it's not like Vivzieshit stuff or even TADC which broke like what, 200 million views?
I think it's kind of sad that we live in an age where if you can't break 200 million views it means your project is seen as at risk of failing. 12 million is great.

            Anonymous

It’s not. Anon is a 16 year old tard.
TADC is an anomaly. Most people would be able to recognize that their views are impressive because those sorts of numbers are rare. Taking a crazy outlier like that and using it as a standard is something a child would do.

I thought Lackadaisy was like the second highest crowdfunded indie animation in history behind some ridiculous dungeons and dragons thing or something, weren’t they?
In any case, they’ve funded their project. What are they in risk of?

                Anonymous

Nothing, they are fully covered and then some. They have nothing to lose unless they somehow go over budget, but I doubt that will happen, everything they have done money wise has been quite responsible.

      Anonymous

I'm hoping in animated form perhaps they will start doing more interesting things with the story. Make it actually an intriguing story, it's semi a murder mystery, but that hasn't come up in ages. Even as a gangster-centric story the characters almost are too nice, and bland.. I dunno - they need that punch. Only Freckle seems to act like a real gangster amidst them all.. outside of the Savoys,Victor, and Mordecai.
Rocky is just a liability and Ivy is there to be.. a cheerleader?
Feels like we've been waiting for ages and nothing of significance happened, outside of Mordecai switching sides.

Anyways, I guess we'll wait and see. I think it may unfortunately be a case of Tracey getting behind the wheel, playing it safe and niche as always then slowly losing steam because it's not grabbing an audience.

Rocky is not her character? I was fricking mega-sad when it happened.

        Anonymous

What you mean when he got the blade to the forehead? I guess that was a bit dramatic, it was a look into his psyche outside of chaos-gremlin.
But nothing really stuck from that, he just went on being the same Rocky after whining a bit and some recovery. Maybe we're meant to notice he's a bit more unhinged or weird..?

I want to see Freckle become more ruthless and Rocky descend into insanity.

Yeah I mean they show glimpses of Freckle being unhinged and more boiling beneath the surface. But nobody really talks about it, nothing ever seems to move from it.
It's honestly frustrating, because we only see tiny glimpses of possible character arcs and then.. nothing.
It seemed like maybe Mordecai was going on this detective esque role, maybe having some morals when interviewing that guy. That maybe he really wants to find out who killed Atlas..? Though other pages make it seem like he did.

Then Tracey just stops updating the fricking thing.

His behavior does change after the head injury. Rocky became so manic that he wasn’t even flinching when Fish was firing bullets at him, instead he walked towards him.

          >Maybe we're meant to notice he's a bit more unhinged or weird..?
When Rocky almost dies against the pig farmers and Freckles narrowly saves him in his manic fit, Rocky is curling into a fetal position and begging to be spared.
After the head injury, he's literally walking towards a guy that's actively shooting him, grinning wide. He IS more unhinged.
