Do scary horror movies even exist?

        Anonymous

That self awareness of being a horror movie is what hurts the scare factor the most. Films that can exist in other genres manage to lure you in with a false sense of security. In that sense ayys will always be scarier than some dude in a mask.

It's fricking good. I hesitate to call it the best ever made because I've still got a lot of classics to see, and there are one or two movies I think are as good as The Thing but are in different genres, but it's definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen.

12 Angry Men might be the best movie ever made but I'm not sure there can be a best. just a tier list.

      Anonymous

Yeah, I've gone over this scenario multiple times. Obviously there isn't a "best" and more likely 20ish or so "best films" that are on equal footing for various reasons; yet, if you put a gun to my head and demanded a definitive "best" film, it's probably The Thing, it's a perfect movie.

      >he dindu it
The film only makes sense if the juror is trying to hide the boy’s crimes. Having an exact copy of the knife is just too coincidental otherwise. The knife honestly ruins the movie.

    >Kurt Russel
    >Keith David
    >Literally 0 women
    >Big theme is humanity's fight for survival
    >No CGI

That alone puts it in the top 20, maybe higher.

The part where they found that the thing has been building a flying saucer is fricking kino.

I like to think it wasn't even a functional craft and the thing just built it because it looked cool

My head cannon is that it wasnt a saucer but a place to sleep while the rescue team arrived.

I was gonna go to a screening of it, then I heard that the screenings of old movies like Jaws and The Thing are shit quality played off some guy's fricking DVD so I never went.

Depends where you go. There's a theater near me that shows old films on the 35mm reels. The Shining was fricking amazing. I hope they bring The Thing sometime, but with my luck I'd miss it like I did when they showed The Warriors.

I saw it in a theater around halloween last year. It was like watching it for the first time all over again after only having watched it at home.

Why are horror movies so bad but when they’re good, they’re really good?
    >Alien
    >The Thing
    >The Decent
    >Day of the Dead
    >Return of the Living Dead
All of these are certified KINO. The only thing worse than shitty horror, is pretentious Horror (like Hereditary.

They're usually cheaper to make so they attract inexperienced directors and cheap actors.

The spaceship at the beginning looks stupid.
A sci-fi horror movie should have more unsettling looking organic alien technology that matches with the monster, not some blinky-lights star trek bullshit.

That opening should be cut to make it a more interesting film

It's always funny to see movies that critics panned on release become huge cult following masterpieces a few years later.
It makes me wonder if movies I think suck coming out today will be considered the greatest movies ever made in the future.

    alien is better

      Anonymous

Alien is really basic, it's a slasher in space.

Members of a dwindling party wander off and get killed, it's only as revered as it is because it was one of the first big mergers between Sci-Fi and Horror.

alien played its purpose setting the stage for aliens though, which is the superior movie and a top ten 80s horror
