le underachiever frickup who is actually brilliant

Why is this such a common trope in movies and tv? In real life smart people always have accomplishments in proportion to their intelligence, but in popular culture every smart character is either a failure of some type, or just autistic.

Midwits who overestimate themselves find it compelling.
We don’t know where people would be on a fair playing field because we don’t have one.
Presume everyone today is not as great as they could have been had they been free to make something of their lives with the advantages their ancestors had.
The hierarchy would still exist, but instead of being a renter you’d own a house.
A smarter man would own a small estate instead of a mansion.
A poor man would be a renter instead of homeless.

What do you mean "cope"? I'm not talking about myself or my loved ones. Everyone who's been on this earth long enough to be an adult should personally know several counterexamples to your claim.

You personally know several people who you thought were smart because you don't have a good understanding of what intelligence really is. You were basically impressed by someone parroting things outside your frame of reference at you.

I went to a top 20 PhD program in physical chemistry. I was friends with NSF fellows, Goldwater scholars, and a Rhodes scholar. I conversed with professors at the top of their field. You are projecting.

You do understand that most professors are midwits right. You won't find a 145+ IQ person in university. It's extremely rare.

Because parenting took a radical shift in the mid 80s and parents went from constructive discipline to 100% positive reinforcement. Which meant entire generations of kids were raised being told that they were basically faultless and perfect, regardless of their reality. So when those kids become adults who have no capacity to self-regulate themselves or the destructive behaviors that their parents ought to have stamped out they fail financially and professionally. And rather than reflect on their own failings and work to correct them, they instead project that onto the world and conclude that because they're uniquely smart and capable, like mommy and daddy said they were, it must be the fault of society that they struggle financially and professionally.

Deviating from the mean in too great an amount in either direction is detrimental to succeeding in a system designed with that mean in mind. How is that not obvious? It’s basic. This feels like spite against your intellectual superiors.

I don't know how realistic your world view is.

From experience in school, the road is paved with strong intellects combined with poor life structures. I don't think there is a direct correlation between success and intelligence, but many things like socioeconomic status, parenting status, family structure, and many more.

I think a huge myth is that smart people in bad situations will naturally flourish, when most evidence I've seen implies that things like trauma or simply poor discipline is often the deciding factor.
Then again, there's also this sort of social truism that smart people are naturally more miserable which I think ends up being a backwards correlation in people's minds that sad = smart.

Idk, TV is a bad example of real life.
Everything about Lips character is self sabotaging in a way that's pretty unrealistic.

My parents called me stupid my entire life (in fact, I think they've called me stupid more times than they've called me by my actual name) and it got to the point where I went to a psych and had myself evaluated for cognitive disabilities. Turns out I have an IQ of 138.

But my childhood experiences have still impacted my personality. It really doesn't matter how smart you are, if you can't get along with people or you don't like being around them or can't trust them, you'll never be able to deliver on your potential. Most things in life are a team effort.

Would you rather watch a movie about someone born with a silver spoon up their ass, gets everything handed to them, works hard as has everything go right?

Its common because everyone has the makings of greatness in them, but life, poor education/parenting, and terrible choices have a way of squandering that. Sometimes all we need is just one chance.

How about a movie that can be watched regularly or backwards.

OP character gets multiple chances and squanders them though. It's not a feel-good story or a "he's literally me, I just wasn't given a chance" story. He's a chad genius who repeatedly screws himself out of success and still falls ass backwards into a mountain of pussy at the end of the day. Then he complains about his life even though nobody is holding him back or screwing him over except himself. He's one of the most insufferable characters on TV.

Movies are escapism meant to pacify the audience.
Male losers will never admit they are stupid and lazy. They NEED to believe that they are secretly really smart even though they have never achieved anything in their lives. These movies reinforce their coping mechanisms and allow them to peacefully continue being losers.
