Might as well blog post here. I am going through every episode. I am on 1-17-07 currently. Went all the way from wnew days. The internet archive sure has a lot of cool stuff. Can't wait to understand how it all fell apart and watch anthony and Opie grow to hate each other.
Fine, I love Anthony and Jim was my favorite comic for years before I even found O&A. The Patrice stuff is great but often sullied by Opie trying to run a 'radio show' even though the best content is when they go off formula. It's interesting to see Bill burr before he went Hollywood and lost his edge. Though even then you could see his trajectory.
Opie, no subs. Anthony, failing company. Jim, massive paycuts and all sorts of studio cutbacks. Ron, stuck doing unlistenable shit to keep his daughter employed.

Does anyone listen to Jim and Sam? I’d rather listen to the chip podcast where Jim is obviously annoyed at having to “do da bit” while simping for a bunch of unfunny holes he surrounds himself with.
It's not even hateable, jocktober material. It's just a pile of nothing. The most entertaining thing they ever did was the Nancy Grace interview, and that was within the first couple weeks. I used to have it on as background noise, but it's not even worth that.

It's one of the most bizarre things ever that such a unfunny weirdo like Opie got a radio show. It's like his job was to ruin the vibe or something. Just so weird.
He wasn't always off kilter. But during XM I always felt he was 4 months behind everyone in terms of show evolution. By the time a mood change or theme change happened. He was late to it.
He was a generic zany rock DJ and a college radio frat bro. A stunt boy who got lucky to be on a major market (ok Worcester lol) rock station at the height of the grunge era
He was also an early adapter of the internet and viral marketing like the assault on the media and WOW. WAAF was a very popular station and did break a few shitty but popular bands like Godsmack.
To be fair, as insufferable as he is sometimes, he did have some great ideas when it came to promoting the show and getting people to feel(empahsis kn feel) involved in the show while growing the audience.
There were tons of shitty radio shows that tried to copy him but couldn't even come close. Taking callers and having them participate and say lines, as well as instant feedback, all that stuff spurred people to become fans of the show and it did work.
He was an ass but he still made it work

Another aspect of this is that Ant is actually a talented comic and perfect for being a funny man on the radio and he just fricked up everything for himself and those around him.
It was a moronic move to just post a racist rant on Twitter but maybe he thought it was acceptable because he was having racist tirades throughout his radio career with no problems
