To be fair they all do that all the time except for Shinobu and Mutsumi (and maybe Kitsune?), and even Shinobu leveled up with a frying pan attack when she reached high school age. Naru was a b***h, but IIRC she mostly beat him up when he accidentally groped her or ripped off her clothes, which he did all the time. She was mostly defending herself and other girls from perceived sexual harrassment, she had no reason to be nice to a guy who constantly perved on her and her friends.
Kaolla on the other hand didn't mind Keitarou's accidental pervert moments and just drop-kicked the shit out of him for fun, and Motoko hated his guts and attacked him with a sword, so Naru's punches were not even that bad in comparison.
Honestly, no the comic is the worst adaptation of the story. The movie fixes the pacing problems and uses Negascott much better. If you just want fun play the game.
Lisa is only in the comic so that's the best adaptation.

I think western studios genuinely don't see value in cartoons and comics anymore due to how mediocre they've been as of late. They see things like anime and manga, a medium that has managed to fulfill the role of cool stories for a young audience, thinking that's how they'll get young people interested in a series that's probably older than a lot of them now.
So they make a faux anime out of Scott Pilgrim, because of anime's positive reputation among kids nowadays, even though the vast majority of people would've probably watched it anyway.

I read a few chapters of Scott Pilgrim a VERY long time ago. I forgot the whole plot, except that Scott chased Ramona and dumped the most kind hearted and only good character in the series. I remember that Scott was an insufferable manchild and a total butthole. Ramona was a bipolar b***h the whole time and had a toxic relationship with this utter waste of human life, because she couldn’t get over her ex I think. Knives was a pure soul who deserved better than hanging around with these dick wads.

yeah, 2nd season felt like an 80's sequel (which is fun in it's own way but not as good as the first). It steadily got worse, but at least they're ending it before it fell off too much further.
Millie Bobbie Brown is like Milla Jovovich. She seemed like a pretty good actor when her job was to walk around silently and look confused, but the more lines she got (and the less the script required her to just look bewildered), the more apparent it became that she is a terrible actor.

So how do you guys feel about the movie nowadays? I re read the comics and I’m it rewatching the movie and only now realized how little of people actually read this series.
i still enjoy the movie as it's own thing, but i reread the series like a week ago after not touching it for like 7 years outside of occasional movie rewatches and the game, and the books are defiitely a different beast with how hard they land the toxic relationship exploration and showing scott's struggles. ramona is also better, envy is better, kim of course is just a very solid series to this day

Movie is ok. Saw it once - wouldn't refuse to watch it again, but it also doesn't hit the same way. The books are fricking awesome. I've been going through them again just recently to refresh before the series hits and they're just solid. As cartoony and slapsticky as the story is, the characters feel very real.
I dislike the movie because it misreads Scott. In the comic, Scott's arc is about realizing he's kind of a crummy butthole and needs to man up. In the movie, Scott's arc is about just having the self-confidence to man up and get the girl.
I do get why they did it, because it makes for a more sympathetic protagonist.

The book arc would be tough to portray during the course of a film. There's a lot of plot they need to blow through...it would be tough to simultaneously make Scott a character who is awful but relatable and someone the audience can root for and THEN show that transformation where he slowly starts to get his shit together.

Frickin' hated it. It's really cut down, gets rid of the really good slice of life stuff to focus on the god-awful fights, and generally unsatisfying.
This new cartoon is what they should have just done from the start.
As things are, the comics were far too long for a movie to ever really be able to do it justice, that much is clear. + I'm not a fan of many of the casting decisions, especially the main leads, Ramona is made too boring (and the wig was horrible and really distracting) and Scott was horribly miscast as a spindly dweeb rather than someone whose got nerdy tendencies but is still hot + an butthole.
Main 'good thing' about it was the direction and how it tied into a the comedy.

I feel like that's a doomed philosophy. The switch happened early enough in a series that hadn't fully established itself that it didn't really feel like it was super crazy. And I think there was enough foreshadowing that fantastic events existed (I forget if they established the Subspace Highway with Ramona or after Patel) that it didn't feel like bitter pill.
