VLC consistently shits the bed and color accuracy is off. I recommend MPC-BE. VLC is literally meme software with issues baked into the code that will always hinder playback with random errors. But if you don't mind random software hiccups during video playback then keep on using it.
This is an exaggerated example of the playback errors that can and do randomly occur. I also watch 4k HDR enabled content and sometimes need it converted to SDR on the fly so color accuracy matters to me.

You don't even need to set it up yourself. Just type in K-Lite installer and it does it for you. Watch a video and test out the MadVR options (need gpu or hw decoder for some).
