In the past it was easy to host torrents and even directly host copyrighted materials. I remember downloading movies, games, etc off megaupload, rapidshare, etc. Like when Breaking Bad was airing, someone here would post a 1080p upload 30 minutes after it airs. This changed suddenly when the fat German guy was arrested and all those direct upload sides went down or went "legit", torrent trackers started getting hit frequently, etc.
Since then the legal machinations have only become less favorable to "free" pirating. Secret elitist club mentality is done out of necessity although surely a lot of virgins take pleasure in it as well.
