I felt they had a premise and shit the bed. The sequels try to explain the origins of the purge(i didn't watch them, my stupid friend did, and he still explained them so bad I read the synopsis). They created the purge(evil white people in the government) to one night a year to lynch all the poor people(browns). I don't think they play it up enough in the first one. The first is almost like a primer to try and get you to think "oh this must happen every purge, well mannered white college kids lynch a black and are willing to kill every ~~*white*~~ who protects them".
They needed something like the week before of Ethan hawkes coworkers asking him if he's joining the Black person lynching mobs this year.
