You could tell he really didn't care for the character by about halfway and was just phoning it in for the sake of continuity in the edited version. With the thematic storyline falling apart they had to rely on the contestants fulfilling an interesting character arc, but the contestants were ultimately not very interesting.
That ultimately comes down to.what everyone complained about the whole way through. Jet and his Black personbrained friends picked the absolute shittiest fish imaginable.
My schizo theory is that they deliberately picked a lot of shitty contestants this season, because they wanted to convince the audience picking contestants from the fans would ruin the show.

The casting was pretty bad apart from a few people like Jimmy and Summer. They let too mamy people leave at the start, so eliminations meant nothing. They didn't plan ahead with the challenges, which for the most part were shit. They forced romances between the contestants which was mostly boring. And the house was too harsh on the eyes, too much visual noise.

All the attractive female contestants left early on, and the freeloaders were there for only a few days max. So there were no long-term cute female cast members, which is a big factor for the overwhelmingly-male audience. Season one by comparison had Josie and Letty.
The house layout was less conducive to interaction and harder for viewers to follow. S1 had a kitchenette "island" where the cast ate, made drinks, and cooked all in close proximity, and this was all covered with a single camera with a good view and sound. It was blended into the living room. S2 had a separate kitchen, a bar, and a lounge that was focused on a large empty space. Three different cameras to switch between if a viewer wanted to try and follow a conversation. The cast had to constantly separate instead of being within talking distance.
The 1970s theme was an enormous waste of time and effort. The decorated and painted rooms distracted from the cast. The outfits were in most cases unappealing. The bare white walls of the S1 house were actually better because they caused the viewer to focus more on the cast, and of course no 1970s theme so cast members could wear a variety of contemporary clothing.
No archive feature. The only way users could capture an event and share it this season was if they obsessively screen-recorded every moment, or used a 3rd-party site's DVR feature and hope that it worked. This was a major reason why this season was significantly less "viral" than S1. There is an enormous amount of people that don't watch the show directly but just catch the highlights from youtubers and people on Twitter.
