That was kind of already the case from the start, they struggled to stick with the concept. I don't think the current setting is constraining creativity in anyway, but that's probably because they are putting out an average of like 3 episodes per year. Older series were contractually obligated to shit out episodes every week so it was a good thing when they just gave up and turned into sketches.
Same with Rick and Morty's best episodes being the episodes where they abandon the main characters just animate a series of improv sketches.
