his failure is more noble and enjoyable than their success

He was just too fricking loud. His show is all screaming and gunfire. People are watching it to fall asleep, which ironically makes Leno's milquetoast style of humor the best for for it, even if it created literally nothing of substance. There's basically no notable clips of Leno's tonight show to be found anywhere, I've been looking

This is pretty sad lol. Just doing fan meet and greets, can't even afford good guests for his shows anymore.

Lenos humour appealed to more people, hence the bigger ratings. It was a tactical move. He won.

Conan always went on and on about what an institution the Tonight Show was and how he was so honored to be doing it. If he really felt that way, why didn't he bow out once it was clear he wasn't working out as the host?

Letterman but Leno was indisputably more popular at the time after Hugh Grant cried on his show after getting busted with that prostitute.
Letterman is more fondly remembered and revered though so probably says a lot about the shows.

Letterman was great...but once Leno started beating him in the ratings he became a bitter butthole on his own show. Then during the W. Bush years he started wearing his politics on his sleeve.
When Conan took over the Tonight Show, Letterman started winning in the ratings, but when Leno came back, Letterman started losing again. And for years Letterman and CBS claimed that Leno was only winning because of better lead in programs, but then CBS became the hot network with Survivor, CSI, and NCIS, and Leno still kept winning. The most brutal beat down you'll ever see.

Compare this to Conan's Chuck Norris lever, or his staring contests with Max Weinberg. It's like comparing the Roman empire to a mud hut village.

Leno's one hell of a car guy though.

Conan has an unrivaled ability to extract comedy from literally anybody and any situation

This one time Max was laid up at home with a broken leg or something, and they set up a satellite video feed (this was early 2000s, no facetime) in Max's living room just for the purpose of having another silent staredown after exactly two lines of back-and-forth pleasantries.
One of the funniest things I've ever witnessed.

Letterman's old slot was pure sovl. It had a smaller budget than a lot of shows on youtube today and had a lot more counter-culture guests. Leno was a more worth successor to Carson, though and Dave lost the magic moving from late late to late.
