I still don't know why people use letterboxd. I thought it had an algorithm that would recommend you movies based on your ratings, but it's just social media.

      Anonymous

I use it simply to remember what films I watched and how good they were so there's have a list to consult when I want to rewatch good films with people who haven't seen them yet. I wouldn't trust any algorithm that tried to recommend films, just watching films from directors you like is more reliable.

How do you forget if you've watched something or not? Are you literally brain damaged?

          Anonymous

Are you brain damaged? I never said I forget that I watched something. But when you're a fan of film you watch a lot of them in a year. Can you off the top of your head list all the films you watched in 2018? You can only do this if you're a pleb who watches 5-10 films in a year.

            >Can you off the top of your head list all the films you watched in 2018?

How about I google 2018 in film and then read a fricking list? Why would I ever need to, off the top of my head, list movies from an arbitrary year?

              Anonymous

If someone asks me for recommendations for Japanese films or European films from 1940-1980 it's useful to have a list of what I've seen. I can only remember the best and most memorable ones instantly. At some point there's too many good ones to have in permanent memory.

And it’s kind of a blessing to not think about bad movies or have any record I watched them. Ya know, other than my brain of course, that will inform me I already watched something if I see it, via this thing we non-morons call memory.

I just use it as a film journal which my friends can see and I see their journals.

Good. Wonder if I can just click watched on the whole show, because if it's episodes or even seasons it's going to get messy.

I use it to remember what I've watched, then if I'm checking a list of spaghetti westerns I can hide the ones I've seen and the ones in my watchlist (aka my hdd). It saves a lot of time.

        Anonymous

If it's whole show it will get messy too. Like what if you mark a show as watched then some c**t reboots the show and you don't watch that? Unmark it?

Plus unless it's a miniseries it takes ages to watch a show, when would it appear in the diary?

used to be cool, ever since ~2020 its been insufferable but has skyrocketed in popularity over the last year or so. now its a generic social media site to posture your film taste as an accessory. not that it wasn't always that but now its instagram tier. the database is still good since it just uses tmdb, so its extremely resourceful and easy to naviate but the whole site just feels gross now. sort of similar to the evolution of last.fm

I remember when letterboxd was just some Cinemaphile posters writing cool stuff about movies. Eventually some professional critics and reddit types joined but it was still something like 90% men. Then around COVID it must've blown up on twitter because suddenly all of the most annoying women and gays joined posting the worst reviews ever. You're right that now it's even worse because those annoying people are now almost the entire userbase. Try scrolling through the reviews of Wonka without wanting to rip your skin off.

For when I'm trying to remember the name of that extremely mid Ginger Rogers musical from the 30's I watched 2 years ago that I only vaguely remember. You'll get it when you're older and have seen more than the imdb top 100.

Why would I want to remember the name of a movie that wasn't very good?

Why would I actively watch a movie that isn't very good and I knew it wouldn't be going in?

If you're trying to do the kubrick thing, the point of shoving that many movies in your face is for the details to blend and merge into original ideas.

Another day wondering what it would be like if a beautiful wife and children greeted me at the door instead of a dark apartment with nothing but the glow of the 75 inch ultra HD 4K hdr oled tv to light it up. What is it about Letterboxd that attracts all the gays? No seriously, the userbase is at least 75% homosexual, dyke, they/them, Lexipro girls or sissified low-T beta male. It's inescapable. All of the popular reviews are written by terminally online mentally ill freaks who simply cannot (it would kill them) not talk about homosexualry or the oppression of women PoC. The straightest movie in the world they will talk about how it's clearly gay (And That's a Good Thing). Or a man is on the cast and the "male" reviewers will say things like "please have sex with my wife (and then me afterwards haha just kidding or am I...)" Or mention how the movie would NEVER be made in (current year) and it's soooo problematic and on the wrong side of history because it was made in the 80s and they laughed at the fat girl instead of bowing down to her on their knees and calling her the most beautiful and powerful specimen on planet earth.

I even made a comment on one of these reviews, calling out a reviewer for being soooo original for bringing gayness into the movie where there is none, and 5 minutes later when I opened the app again I was logged out because I had already been banned by the mods, kek.

So someone PLEASE make a Letterboxd for straight white non-mentally ill people.

letterboxd back in 2014-2015 used to mainly be filled with anons from Cinemaphile. somewhere along the line tumblr and eventually film twitter caught wind of the site and it's been downhill ever since. it doesn't help that the mods seem to be on the freak's side, which was apparent when they added pronouns to the site, but it's gotten to the point where you can get banned for saying anything even slightly controversial in their eyes. hence why all reviews on What is a Woman? are STILL FRICKING BANNED over a year later. you used to be able to get gems like this in the reviews section, but these have all been nuked. at the very least, I have seen a small community of Christian film reviewers growing on the site. one of their lists talking about all the films they will never see (mainly gay/commie propaganda) was even in the popular lists section a couple weeks ago. it really sucks that letterboxd still has the best UI for a film logging site, because the community is absolute cancer

        >WTF why is the ToS and moderation not allowing open and hateful bigotry on the platform?!?

Perhaps because normal people don’t like seeing nazi shit and it improves the user experience? It really tells you the level of pathetic victimhood this board revels in when people here can’t stfu about trans people and all the time turn Letterboxd discussions to whining how the platform allows gay and trans people use it and how much it traumatises the average Cinemaphile poster to see a review they don’t like

Disingenuous post. We wouldn't care if gays and trannies used it. Most people don't give a frick about gays and trannies. The problem is gays and trannies are so mentally ill they cannot help but force upon us the fact that they're gays and trannies. It is the gays and trannies that enter a group and talk about how that group is so bad because they don't censor themselves just so the mentally ill gays and trannies aren't offended because an 80s movie character pointed and laughed at a fat b***h or some shit. If they kept discussion geared towards, you know, the actual content of the movie, and stopped talking about their gay shit or how this or that is offensive, most people wouldn't give a frick.

Riiiiiiiiiighht That’s why every fricking thread heavily features anons crying about it.

Because of the reasons I spelled out in my post. Stop being disingenuous.

Only terminally online obsessive morons would use such a site. It’s basically hard wired for the autistic, thus, gay/trans.

They already have TV shows, they just moronicly take the runtime of every single episode of the TV show and add it together and call it a "movie."
