    >4 kurosawa movies

    he's really not THAT good

      Anonymous

nobody who seeks out kurosawa and watches more than one of his movies is going to rate him poorly. It's always somebody who heard a Hollywood person they like gushing over kurosawa, so they rate his films on the basis that he set the groundwork for any other movies they like in the current era. Taken in isolation they are good but not 4 of the top 20 of all time good. It's just hard to give middling reviews when everyone knows the height of the pedestal they were placed on decades after release

      1. Good movie.
      2. Somewhat underground. Thus people talk about it since few heard about it.
      3. Foreign film - bonus points.
      4. A few strong shots that are perfect for posting.
      5. Became a meme on Cinemaphile, and then spread to reddit and elsewhere like most online tv/film culture.

Cinemaphile is way more influential than many think but it's all in the background, and it doesn't hit mainstream until it hits reddit.

        >Cinemaphile is way more influential than many think but it's all in the background

          Anonymous

We are. You know why the prequels are memed upon and loved online? Cinemaphile was riffing on them and joking about them for YEARS then /r/prequelmemes was started which reposted all of our jokes. Then people who genuinely loved the prequels came in and then it took off. After that they started creating their own content that was praising the films rather than mocking them like Cinemaphile did.

That happens time and time again, but it's mainly reddit or twitter that takes Cinemaphile content then shows it to the rest of the internet. Come and See was of course an obscure critical darling, but it was Cinemaphile that spammed the film into relevance after the Bluray was released. You could likely just do the same with any old random ass film, and then reddit or letterbox will "discover" the film and suddenly it'll see a resurgence.

That review sounds like they stopped watching about 20 minutes in and over-reacted to the "Nazi" themed Cafe. Also likely didn't know what a School Cultural Festival is. Shutaro isn't a Nazi, he just thinks that military is cool, and Leopards were postwar West German tanks, not Whermarch.

I have not seen a worse list.

              Like to be honest? Yeah.

              >You can't just have recent movies on your list. They must all be critic approved classics.

I think the voting should just be raw votes without any weighting. Then have the option to remove films based on 5 year intervals. Remove last 5 years, 10 years, 10 years, 15 years, etc. That way you get the raw votes, but then also the chance to remove recent bias.

Like if Letterbox was around when Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, etc were released they'd just dominate every list ever simply because they were so popular at the time. Anything released in the last 10 years has a huge bias.

There are some really classic films ranked low that I think are silly, but then I look at what has been changed since the revamp and they were originally ranked even lower, or not on the list at all. Letterboxd has a ways to go before claiming a hold on future film canons, even if sight and sound just shot itself in the face.

Sight and Sound added a bunch of letterbox trannies (no joke) when they expanded the critics list. Letterbox is home to a bunch of lunatics and radicals with no lives shouting into the void. I have no idea why some of these people get so many likes when they're clearly schizo. And I looked up some of my favorite films only to see complaints about how they "don't make sense", or are filled with "the male gaze" or transphobia, or whatever.

Yes I think it is but it's sort of weird at the same time. It's not some Godfather-tier epic drama, the movie is a masterpiece because of how immersive it is and how many ideas the film explores without actually showing much. Very accessible and easy to watch but I can see how normies might think it's uneventful or lame

It's a fricking cartoon for children and teenagers. It's not fricking high art. It's a generic but well handled cartoon movie. It did what it sought after to do well. That's it.

It's not so much a leap in animation as it is reaching what should have been the standard 10 fricking years ago.
Animation has been dead and uninspired for years. Spider-Man hasn't done anything new or advanced but it's changed the game by showing you can make actually good animation and it can make money.

      >Spiderverse is innovative and a leap in animation
All I have to say to people who genuinely claim this is that they should watch more animation. Because if you seriously think that capeshit multiverseshit gagshit is a leap forward in anything, then you've got another thing coming. The only reasons I could see someone says this are 1) they are inclined to say it to prop up their own industry or 2) they treat animation as a tech demo, meaning they don't actually respect as a format of film. Cause there's more innovation and creativity in the big animation festival's short film line up than there is in this entire flick. And those films were basically made on no budget.

I listen to artists and they don't even acknowledge Spiderverses existence. It's a non-factor to actual creatives. Maybe you should spend less time listening to "artists" who are first and foremost concered with commercial success.

The animation is seriously impressive (though not better than picrel which came out in the 80s) but especially with this most recent one the story feels a tad underbaked

Happened with rym, the shift was so obvious and gay, To Pimp A Butterfly being like the highest rated album of all time. Even on myanimelist, you’d think we’re in a golden age of all media if you checked these sites but it’s just no-lifes whose brains were developed by social media and their obsessive need to feel like they aren’t missing out, that they’re WITNESSING some important cultural moment. Zoomers terrified of missing out, millennials terrified of aging and falling out of touch, not being kids anymore. Amount of times I’ve seen “I’m just so thankful I got to be alive at this moment in time and culture so I could witness rap homie sell a lot and movie homie sell a lot,” so pathetic it’s hardly even human.

their new weighted ranking system is genuinely moronic. the old list had a lot more hidden gems in it and now they've all been pushed out because of regional rankings being taken into account. so now all we get is english films and japanese films. and yeah theres the occasional french or russian flick. but regular ass anime has been pushed into the list now. really just feels like it's become homogenised with the opinions of the rest of the internet. super lame from them.

Feels like it was in response to everyone b***hing about that Brazilian movie being so highly rated. yeah actually i'm the same in regard to that brazilian one. would never have known about it as well. and thats what i really liked about the old list, finding shit i didn't know existed. even if i didn't enjoy it, i got to broaden my ideas of what cinema can be. the films around the bottom of the list were always changing and being some obscure shit that nobody had actually watched sneaking into the list and would almost certainly disappear a week later, but they were different at least. who knows, maybe the list will switch up again as they said they were going to be adjusting the rating system further. only time will tell.

It's thoroughly inoffensive with a clean cut and easy to digest moral story. Not even trannies can find something to dislike about it cause the rape scenes strongly resonate with them. Does that mean it's the greatest film of all time? No. But on a list that's made up of averages it makes a lot of sense for it to be near the top.

I see at least : 12 Angry Men (good movie, not even remotely top 20 though), Parasite (too soon to tell), Spidermen (LMAO), just 1 Godfather movie please, High and Low (too much Kurosawa), Shawshank Redemption (overrated as frick), Schinder's List (too American), City of god (yes if you are 13 years old), Lord of the Rings (it is not even the best PJ movie). Where is Tarkovsky? Where is Bela Tarr? Where are the Italians and the French directors?

Filtering a large part of the userbase. Just read some of the reviews of pretty much any Antonioni film, especially Blow-Up.

It was honestly really funny that some Brazilians managed to almost canonize a selection of their shitty 2000s comedies and convince countless zoomers that they were on par with the greatest films ever made. We're talking "Horrible Bosses 2" tier movies they spammed with 10s to the point of eclipsing of the rest of cinema.
