Dune is only a scifi story in the sense that it pays lip service to materialistic explanations. For example, the Bene Gesserit definitely don't have magical powers of mind control, it's just "subtle manipulation". The spice doesn't let you (mentally) time travel, it just makes you so galaxybrained that you can see all potential futures (with 100% accuracy) (with the exception of CHOSEN ONES that are immune to your not-futuresight).

Its not like those two have changed much, even in ancient greece you would have liberal and conservative elements. The names change but the fundamental character of them doesn't, we use the terms 'conservative' and 'liberal' and Frank probably decided not to make up new terms for them just to tell the reader 'conservative' and 'liberal'.
