Most likely a comedic misunderstand involving current year social norms

        this is pretty funny.

yeah NC is pretty much a pansy about those 7 times out of 10. pretends things "haven't aged well" or "weren't even acceptable back then" (then howcome it was in a movie millions of people saw, doug. you are 40-something, you should remember when this was normal)

    >a whole bit where we pretend we don't want to review the movie
That innocent shtick in MST3K has really been driven into the ground by mindless imitaiton.

MST3k isn't ironic. The movies there are genuinely awful. We're not talking "lol Torgo is so funny". Try watching the Dead Talk Back episode again sometime.

MST3K is a comedy. They wanted to play bad movies as fodder for jokes. The whole "watching this movie is painful" bit was just a (perfectly servicable) gag for the show's thin narrative premise. The problem is too many internet types copied the idea without wondering if it worked for the different show they were making.

It's important to note that the 'reviewers' in MST3K are characters. A robot and some bloke who got abducted by aliens. It's not presented as a review of a movie, but rather two people being forced against their will to watch bad movies for the rest of their lives.

AND the movies they would riff and joke one were legitimately unwatchably terrible films. Not like, spy kids 2 or whatever. Manos: The Hands of Fate is actually painful to try to sit through without commentary. Internet reviewers could never.

It's the same reason that the concept of MSTing fanfiction has been a perpetual thing. If you have a sufficiently bad product, it can only be improved by commentary, and there is no shortage of bad fanfiction.

The key was they wanted movies that were bad, but also watchable and great to riff on. There were actually a lot of bad movies they didn't bother putting on the show.

is right that as lot of MST3K fans who became e-celebs didn't fully understand this.

Isn’t jay supposed to be an actual film critic and went to college to study film? I feel like he’d hate the majority of YouTube critics

I think that’s the joke it’s why Jay is questioning it stating he needs the money and you can see the glass of alcohol that’s more empty than full also Jay looking like a mess.

I agree with your interpretation but that's a lowball glass and Jay's a snob, so that's probably an untouched glass. Whiskey snobs leave the majority of the glass empty so the liquor can "breathe". Still begrudgingly present for the crossover review and planning to drink his way through it, but not necessarily already drinking.

Yeah, the idea implied in there is that he really hit rock bottom after getting canceled and his apology didn't take

I wonder who makes more money, traditional critics or YouTube ones.

Reminder that Channel Awesome was recently bought by Warner Bros.

This means that Nostalgia Critic is officially eligible as a playable character for Multiversus.
