I can imagine that version of him acting as more of an "older brother" type rather than an actual father in Gumball and Darwin's lives with certain episodes being an exception, where he has "oh shit!" moments and has to step up for once and act as a mature adult instead of just being a guy who still acts as if he's in his early to mid twenties.
