I watched Perfect Blue and for life of me can't remember most of the story. Usually don't have that issue so what is going on? I remember the singing part at the beginning, her being nude at some photoshoot and the bathtub screaming. That's it.

I don't want to look at hideous bug men. If I were Emperor my first decree would be that all anime characters must be based on the bustiest, bawdtiest, lustiest JAV prostitutes.

I have a so-so knowledge of anime and I've only watched the first season of one punch man, (which was kino) three seasons of my hero academia (which was shit) and I'm halfway finished with kill la kill (which has been kino so far).
Where do I go from here? and what about manga, where should I start there?
I'd go to Cinemaphile but they seem lame.

      Here's my personal favorites chart.
from left to right and top to bottom

Turn A Gundam, Planetes, Crest of the Stars
Neon Genesis Evangelion, Eureka Seven, Oban Star Racers
FLCL, Macross: Do you Remember Love, Fullmetal Alchemist 2003

I think you'd like FLCL the most since it was made by some of the people who did KLK.

Here's a sort of "Anime Canon" chart.
These are basically some of the "classics" people would tell you to try out to dip your feet into the medium, they're some of the best it has to offer.
Try checking out Samurai Champloo or Wings of Honneamise

It's a pretty old list, but it's solid imo. I've only seen about 1/3 of what's on it, but they're all at the very least worthwhile.

I also have a rec chart from Cinemaphile

Not him, but I couldn't tolerate more than 1 season of Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei. It has a few great gags, but its too dense and full of jokes that just don't translate well.

          Anonymous

That is not really a good list. It looks like someone trying to criterion collection anime and basically took something like "Watanabe good, I saw on adult swim. All Watanabe must be good!". The did that for kon and shinkai, Miyazaki and then added any other old anime people still talk about. These are in general the once in awhile shows/movies and are arthouse or nostalgia.

I have a so-so knowledge of anime and I've only watched the first season of one punch man, (which was kino) three seasons of my hero academia (which was shit) and I'm halfway finished with kill la kill (which has been kino so far).

I'd go to Cinemaphile but they seem lame.

I would suggest looking at animes produced by the same studio as the ones you like, and same for avoiding studios if you didn't like something. It doesn't always hold true, but many studios are pretty focused on doing one or two types of anime and for example if you liked something from kyoani you probably will like the rest. There are some generalist studios who churn out whatever they can based on popular mangos of the time which is where it breaks down, but even then it has some use because there are different feels to adapted mango vs animey original.
From what you posted I would recommend Gurren Lagann and to try other gainax and trigger shows. You probably want to ignore most adaptations that haven't ended as a series. Again there are exceptions since you might like Goblin Slayer and part of the fun is the hype during the release (I haven't watched s2 which just ended).

            >I would suggest looking at animes produced by the same studio as the ones you like
This doesn't work for all studios, it's better to pay attention to staff. Directors, writers, key animators, character designers, composers.

              Anonymous

Correct, but I think it works well enough for someone just getting in to it and it gets somewhat obvious that you shouldn't write off a big studio like Bones just because you don't like MHA. But if you don't like one thing from PA Works I bet the same applies to the rest of their series.

            >That is not really a good list.

      >dubbed
It'd completely ruin Dandy's random Engrish gimmick.
And I just know a lot of episodes and characters would get annihilated by awful modern VAs. Especially the after-life planet episode, and the alt-universes one.
