I thought the Ape films ended? They were pretty forgettable outside of the first film.
They're picking up on the next era of apes, where they can all speak verbally and ride horses and enslave humans. But it's not quite at the era where Mark Whalberg arrives yet, so it's still a prequel.
I stand by the conviction that the only reason there weren't 5 of those was Ape Lincoln

Murphy definitely had a bad era during the 90's. They did metro which had a more serious tone, the movie was a little profitable but not a huge success. Murphy then rebounded well by doing shit comedy movies like Meet Dave to the point of being the most well paid actor of Hollywood.

Note that one year after Metro came Rush Hour which IMO is a lot like Beverly Hills in spirit. Murphy tried to do his own Rush hour with Showtime but the movie was a loss.
