>The “Game of Thrones” franchise creator published a blog post titled “Dark Days” that included a banner reading “current mood: depressed.” Martin reflected on the past year as he ushered in 2024.
>“This year, though, as I reflected on the year we had just lived through, I found I had no appetite for living through any of that again,” Martin said. “2023 was a nightmare of a year, for the world and the nation and for me and mine, both professionally and personally. I am very glad that it is over. Unfortunately, so far 2024 looks to be even worse.”
>He continued, “Well, I take solace where I can. In chocolate thrones, if nowhere else. In books. In films and television shows…though even there, toxicity is growing. It used to be fun talking about our favorite books and films, and having spirited debates with fans who saw things different…but somehow in this age of social media, it is no longer enough to say ‘I did not like book X or film Y, and here’s why.’ Now social media is ruled by anti-fans who would rather talk about the stuff they hate than the stuff they love, and delight in dancing on the graves of anyone whose film has flopped.”
>“People say, ‘I’m done with “Game of Thrones,” they burned me, I’m not even going to watch this new show — I’m not going to watch any of the new shows,'” Martin said, citing the premiere of prequel series “House of the Dragon.”
>“I mean, are we talking about a million people? Or are we talking about 1,000?” Martin continued. “People who have nothing to do except tweet all day over and over again? I don’t know.”

If you sell something as being part of a series, you implicitly promise the reader that the lack of a conclusive ending is something to be rectified.
An author does owe readers their books, and if you don’t believe me ask a publisher how well they’d sell if you added a note saying

Danny becoming evil was oblivious after first book. In first book. She is set up in way that she could be child of Rhaegar and Lyanna. Orginal outline especially foreshadows that. Song of ice and fire would be about Stark kids.
But then George fell in love with dragon frickers and now everything had to be about them.

Set up is clearly people rejecting her after she arrives with his slave and horde army.
She can't take that rejection and goes crazy. But I doubt she will be one to burn down kings landing. That will probably be done by Jon Connington. How his biggest failure was when he didn't burn down town.
Now when he sieges kings landing. He set its on fire. And maybe cersei has been stockpiling blue fire stuff and how city goes boom.
Now Jon Connington two biggest mistakes were not burn down town and burning down town.
Danny's evil thing will probably be destroying Griff in brutal way after people chose him over her.

Its pretty clear Rowling had multiple ghost writers. She wrote 1, 2, 3 and 7 100%herself. And she had help or full on ghost writer in 4, 5 and 6.
Probably help with 4 and 5 and full on ghost writer in 6. You get whiplash with how diffrent 6 is compared to rest. Espesily when its sandwished between order and hollows.
Style and content is just diffrent.
This is only book where harry is treated like jock he is. Women want him. He is most famous kid in school. Rich. Ace in sport team. Always center of atenttion.
In rest of the books he is treated like smelly nerd looser. But in 6. He is jock. Its only book where he has any lust.
In order. Harry is angsty b***h boy. Then 6 he isn't that much anymore.
Whole point of 6 is to set up final book and prepare harry for duel against voldemor. All the lessons from Snape and dumbledor are for that. At end Snape is screeming to harry what to do. Harry and dumbledor getting soulstone is set up what you expect rest of them to be.
But then 7 comes and its wildy diffrent. Non of the set ups pay off. Soulstone hunt is biggest nothing burger there is. They just fall on gangs hand. Other then bank heist.
All the set up for end duel is just forgotten and it's super wand that solves issue.

Newspeak has taken over political discourse, cancel culture is destroying lives and careers, and we have a disgraced, indicted, venomous ex-president winning primaries despite openly declaring that he will be a dictator on day one and will govern on a platform of “retribution,” when he is not busy grabbing women by the pussy. His last attempt to overthrow the government failed on January 6, but some of his more ardent supporters are now saying that “next time” they will bring more guns. I don't get why he's so upset. All of the geopolitical crises going on simply serve as good writing inspiration for him. He's so wealthy that all of that barely affects him. If he's worried about people not voting the way he wants to vote, why doesn't he write up a Putin or Trump-like figure and have the Starks take them down through the power of friendship? Or he could have some reveal that Yi Ti is filling Westeros with some tainted milk of the poppy shipments. Or he could just double down on his hedonism and write twice as much incest. The sky's the limit for this guy.
But we all knew he was out of juice years ago. Shit, probably a decade ago when he had the chance to write the new books before the show caught up.

To be A Good Person, you have to be obsessed with supporting Ukraine, supporting Israel, getting vaxxed, respecting pronouns, celebrating diversity, and opposing Drumpf. If you aren't obsessed 24/7 with those topics, you might notice that the price of food, gas, and rent have doubled while the minimum wage is less than $8, you never got a drop of student debt relief, unions are dying, pensions barely exist anymore, and healthcare is less important than printing billions for Ukraine and Israel. In my country, we pirate things mostly but evenso, a few seasons into GoT it was hard to come by anybody who wasn't watching the series. The few people I've told about HotD didn't even know it was out and said "they'll get around to watching it eventually... Maybe in a few years".

Although I care little and less for what you have to say, this concern is not without a certain low cunning.

Poison was a woman's weapon like as not, though a flagon of fine Dornish sour red sat flanked by two stone cups in the bedchamber. "A sellsword is loyal only to his purse, but a Lannister always pays his debts," said the fiery-haired prostitute as she unlaced his sleeveless leather jerkin, after which he spent himself inside her with three quick thrusts.

My theory is that the finale he had planned for the books was in the broad strokes the same as the show: Jon is R+L, Jon and Dany bump uglies, the others are defeated and then they have to deal with more political war bullshit, Jaime ends up dying for incest pussy, Dany goes crazy and dies, Jon goes wildfolk, and someone else takes the throne.
He saw the reaction to the tv ending and tried unsuccessfully to write a different ending, before realizing that he would have to basically rewrite the whole series for it to work. Thus he just quit and is now endlessly procrastinating until the day he dies and he doesn’t have to be bothered with finishing the books anymore.

      Anonymous

Yeah that's what I assume too.
But honestly it would be fine if he followed that outline. The problem with the TV series was the execution.

Daenerys turning into her mad father would have worked if they had done it over the course of a one or two full seasons, not over the course of two episodes. Same with Jon hooking up with her for a time and killing her in the end. But those ideas would need actual story arcs.

The last two "seasons" of GoT feel like a show that got canceled and had to wrap things up hastily. It's so dumb.

      Anonymous

Yes. The trouble is the ending wouldn’t be bad if HE had written it. It would make sense and the pacing would work in the same way the rest of the show worked.
But D&D and whoever else aren’t GRRM so they couldn’t write his book and it came out badly. Not their fault; he was supposed to be done by then. If he had been the ending would be “the same” but it would have worked. Maybe people wouldn’t like king bran, but they wouldn’t have been that mad. Plenty of stuff has kind of bad endings but is still loved.
I don’t understand why he doesn’t believe in himself enough to know that. Maybe because then he would have to accept that he ruined the biggest show of the 2010s and what would have been that last big blow-out budget mass TV phenomena before it died by not finishing on time.

The problem is the execution. How the frick are you going to say the others are the biggest threat of all time, le winter is le coming for almost 10 years, and then the entire threat is over within 2 episodes and they get as far as ..............Winterfell. And this is with Westeros getting absolutely ravaged for 7 seasons straight with war. Imagine how much of a non-issue they would have been with all the power players still alive like Robert, Ned, Tywin, Robb, etc etc.
The war with the others alone should have been a 10-12 episode season moving all the way down to King's Landing. Instead we see a 90lb chain smoking bong end it all with a knife. Show was so fricking bad it makes me cringe to this day

Nah there are other factors in the books that completely change the story

It's more probable that Cersei dies in the winds of winter and in the last book someone like Euron is the one of endgame boss ( with the white walkers being the main focus)

I don't think Dany's supposed to go "evil" and because we have her PoV, we're supposed to understand that her cruelties are logical and not from insanity. She'll burn down king's landing by accidentally blasting a wildfire cache, setting off a chain reaction that blows up the whole city.

Anon, by those same metrics we can say that Baywatch had limitless cultural impact. Being successful at the time has nothing to do with staying power.

Time will tell. Stick around for another 20 or 30 years and you'll see for yourself whether younger generations will revist George's work and take inspiration from it or if it was just a flash in the pan limited to our own generation. For what it's worth, "Game of Thrones" has become a byword for political intrigue for a lot of people. If you sat down right now and wrote a gritty fantasy novel about people backstabbing one another in a bid for power, your work would inevitably be compared to that of the fat man. But we'll see if this will last. Personally I do believe that leaving his life's work unfinished is going to kneecap George's legacy badly.

I believe the opposite will happen and in fact, I think GRRM _wants_ to leave ASOIAF unfinished, as there's no way he can ever write anything that will satisfy the Internet (which has discussed and debated his story for almost 30 years now.

It's really easy actually. Shed some light on the old gods, explain what the others motivation is, bring Jon back, bring Dany west, war with the others, solve the war with the others, put a targaryen on the throne

He doesn't need to write something that would satisfy the majority of readers, a controversial ending would do just fine for securing his legacy.

But leaving the reader hanging after two thirds of the way? Who would want to start reading in the series in the future, knowing perfectly well that it just randomly stops with zero resolution for any of the major protagonists? Sure, many of the people who got invested into ASOIAF before it became clear that it's headed for a dead end will always wonder what could've been. But those people will go extinct eventually. You only get to have a legacy if you create something that will remain accessible and/or impactful for the children of the original audience and their children in turn. I don't see how ASOIAF is supposed to stay relevant for new generations in its current state. The missing ending will carry no mystique for the people who are born in 2024. It'll just be a red flag that they should steer clear of the series altogether.

GRRM wants to leave it unfinished, because after the book comes out his libtard “fans” will immediately cancel him for writing rape scenes about underage characters. He saw what happened to JK Rowling. Withholding Winds is the only card he has to keep them at bay.

I looked up the bestselling books by year hoping to dunk on Martin by Harry Potter claiming in their publication years, but not only was Harry Potter beaten by random John Grisham novels every year, but the first YA to be the bestseller for its year was diary of a wimpy kid and Tolkien wasn’t the bestseller in its year for any LOTR book, only the somatic lion (not looking up how to spell it).

I think it's more about lasting cultural impact than record breaking sales. Are there university classes based on that lion book, for example? I think Harry Potter is the only title that can approach the impact of Tolkien's works but on a much lower level.

This is what I don't get. He's used this excuse before because something something like the books are writing themselves and he has no control over them. It's so weird, but I think it's either him trying to justify unpopular choices or realising his style of making shit up along the way didn't go as planned.

It's funny Cinemaphile hates George based solely on this caricature people paint of him here. You quoted some gay article about his blog post instead of his actual blog post and took the quotes out of context to make it sound like he was mad at Game of Thrones fans when that's actually not what he was talking about at all

The two most common things people accuse him of is:
    >being lazy
    >not caring
Truth is if he was lazy he would have retired already, and if he didn't care the series would be finished by now and he would've made gorillions more dollars off it. He's just a neurotic autist that cares too much and works too much on dozens of other projects that aren't ASOIAF
