I finished Zeta for the first time the other day, I still have no fricking clue why she did anything that she did.

Trauma from a rape during the OYW twisted her sense of self and values. She wanted to be a soldier who fights for a good cause but at the same time desperately wanted to be loved and cared for as a woman, not a fighter. Char refuses to give her that attention outside of the occasional dicking down. Eventually she sort of has a nervous breakdown which is exasperated by her newtype powers awakening and Scirocco’s influence over her that starts when they first meet causes her to decide that being loved and wanted is more important to her and she chooses to defect to the Titans to be by his side as he’s willing to fill that hole in her, both figuratively and literally

Huh... so her explanation of "I'm a woman" makes 100% sense then.

My problem with how this is handled in show is how sirocco just makes her gas a colony and fight battles, showing her not the slightest tenderness. He's treating her like a pawn. At this point, she's just rationalizing away the fact that she's acting out of spite towards Char and the rest of the crew for seeing her as a soldier first and a woman secondarily. The audacity of the woman!

Yeah that does happen but I think it makes sense really. By that point she’s so desperate for recognition that she’s willing to throw away everything she once stood for. Char will frick her but he won’t tell her he loves her or anything like that, but Scirocco constantly feeds her a load of sweet nothings which scratches that itch she has. I see it as a coping mechanism really. Before she gasses the colony she’s saying stuff like “where are the AEUG? They have to get here and stop me!” which leads me to believe that her fury towards them is her desperately trying to dissociate herself from her own actions, which spirals into these crazy delusional rants about how no one ever understood her. Think of it as “Why aren’t the AEUG here to stop me? Damn them, if only they got here sooner this wouldn’t have happened. I hate them for making me do this, they never once thought of me as a woman”. It sounds ridiculous written out but a lot of people do have those cycle of thoughts when it comes to deflecting blame and such

There’s a scene in episode 49 before she deploys with Scirocco and he says something like “When this war is over, I want you to rule over the Earth Sphere as it’s Queen” and her reaction is a mix of confusion and uneasiness as to why he would even suggest such a thing but then he kisses her and she just instantly submits and hops in her suit. She’s kinda like Katejina in a sense that there is a good person buried underneath the layers of delusion and hatred bubbling up within her but she’s in so deep now that a simple peck on the lips by Scirocco makes her go out anyway. To me, she knows what she’s done and what she’s doing is monumentally evil and horrible and that she’s sided with a total lunatic but she chooses to ignore all of that because he’s willing to be a shoulder to lean on, even if it’s fake and she’s being used a pawn

How is it that Tomino manages to write such realistic women?

It’s funny really because a majority of the episodes where Reccoa has a moment were written by women. Actually half the writing staff were women

That would explain a lot actually. Usually when you find characters like her it's in stuff like josei manga.

Kamille has similar deflection as well. It's definitely meant to be a recurring theme in various forms.

        She was raped?

Yeah her last lines allude to it.
          >Reccoa: Please understand, Lt. Emma. Men are so involved in fighting… they think of women as mere tools. Sometimes all they know is how to humiliate a woman!
          >*Palace Athene is destroyed*
          >Emma: You were humiliated, Reccoa Londe?
Reccoa uses the term ‘Hazukashime’ (辱め) which translates to ‘humiliation/shamed’ etc but is commonly used as euphemism for being raped.

The English dub uses the term ‘take advantage of’ which also fits with what she’s trying to say
          >Reccoa: Don’t you understand, Emma? All men care about is fighting their battles. They think of women as tools to be used as they see fit. No, it’s worse than that. If given half the chance, all they’d do is take advantage of us!
          >*Palace Athene explodes*
          >Emma: Take advantage of us? Reccoa Londe…
I think some sub material elaborated that it occurred when she was guerrilla during the OYW as that’s all Zeta says on the matter, but it does provide some needed context to why she’s so fricking nuts

I've always wondered what the deal was with her and Yazan, it was set up a bit like she had attraction to him but it was hard for me to parse through Tomino's/Sirrocco's Newtype bs

Was it that Yazan made her feel like a woman because he didn't respect them and couldn't view them as soldiers? Or is her attraction to Yazan all in my head for some reason

          Anonymous

Nah she feels nothing towards him. The weird pressure she feels is from Scirocco because they’re both Newtypes. Yazan doesn’t have that, in fact he straight up shuts down his own developing newtype powers because he thinks they’re an illusion created by the AEUG. She only goes along with him because they were fighting at the time before she gives in to Scirocco’s will

I swore she had some kind of interaction with Yazan but maybe he was just in frame and it was about Sirocco and it's all in my head

She was meant to be crushing on him in early drafts apparently, at least she had a thing for people like him.

      >As a member of the anti-Earth Federation elements at the Sweetwater colony, she collaborates with Char for some time. Yet at the same time, she begins to have doubts about Char’s ideology-driven way of life. That being said, she still sympathizes with Char as he struggles to oversee the anti-Earth Federation government. But, she falls in love with men like Kamille, who struggle to cooperate with others because they can’t assimilate. Her elder sister-like personality arguably conflicts with Char’s. Despite that, she holds a lifelong grudge against Char for laughing at her while he mocked her by saying, “You run off to a little boy and still call yourself a woman.”
